有些药品遇光能分解变质，应贮存在棕色瓶内或用黑纸包好，置于暗处。
有些药品易挥发，如樟脑，碘酒，乙醇，十滴水等，更要注意包装严密，用后及时封好。这些药品忌放入冰箱内保存。
有特殊气味或有毒的药品，应分别存放。不同品种的药品，不要放在同一瓶内混合保存。
有些药品，如胰岛素、胎盘球蛋白、眼药水、眼药膏等，在常温下，只能短暂保存，应及时放入冰箱冷藏室内贮存，否则会变质失效。
中药应放在阴凉通风处保存，以防止发霉、虫蛀。
家中保存的各种药品，都要有明确的标签，还应尽量保持原标签的完整，脱落、模糊不清的标签，应补贴或补写，药品名称、用途、用法、用量、注意事项的字迹必须清楚。有些药品还有有效期、失效期。内服药、外用药、大人药与儿童药，应分别放置，以免用错。
一般药品都应放在药箱内保存。药箱要定期清理，对已发霉、潮解、过期、无标签或标签不清的药品，应及时处理掉，以免误用。家庭药箱应放在通风、干燥、避光、易取的明显地方，并要加锁，以免小儿误服。
有不少药品注明了有效期，过期不可再用。未注明有效期的药品，即使没有发生变质情况，到了5年，有条件的应送检验部门，检验合格后再用，否则应废弃。
