夹具是机床加工系统的重要组成部分，能够提高机床的加工能力和效率，保障加工精度和降低操作强度。通常，夹具可以分为通用夹具、专用夹具和组合夹具。组合夹具用于解决专用夹具设计制造周期长的问题，可分为槽系组合夹具和孔系组合夹具两大类，也有孔槽结合的组合夹具。组合夹具是在机床夹具零部件标准化基础上发展起来的，由一套结构、尺寸已经规格化、系列化和标准化的通用元件和合件组装而成，具有灵活多变、适应范围广、可重复使用等特点；能够缩短生产准备周期，节省人力物力，减少夹具存放库房面积和简化管理工作；缺点是外形尺寸较大、笨重、刚性较差、一次性投资费用较高等。
CAD/CAM广泛应用于产品的设计、分析、加工仿真与制造等过程，并取得了显著效果。但是在设计过程中，有大量的绘图工作涉及标准件。生产实践证明，标准件具有优良的性能，采用标准件能够保证产品的质量，同时也能够降低企业的生产成本。由于这些零部件的数量大、结构形式多，不仅绘图过程非常繁琐，而且还要反复查阅手册，寻找数据。因而，迫切需要一种直观方便、快捷准确地绘制标准件的方法，使用户能够灵活地调用标准件，生成所需要的模型。
现有的CAD/CAM系统均不提供组合夹具技术资料和三维图库，工程技术人员仍然需要使用传统的纸质工具书、手册、相关书籍进行资料查询及三维标准件建模，为此迫切需要建立一个标准件库，以有效地积累设计成果，实现在设计过程中对已有设计资源及成果最大限度的使用，避免重复劳动，从而提高设计质量与效率。标准件库是将各种标准件或零部件信息存放在一起，并配有管理系统和相应CAD/CAM标准接口的软件系统。用户可以通过标准件库查询、检索、访问和提取所需的零件信息，供设计、制造等工序使用。
