Introduction

一本小册子匆忙写成，目的是给同学们简单介绍一下美国的大学，尤其是排名靠前的学校的专业及其就业情况。现在美国的金融危机波及世界，美国的国内失业率已创1992年以来的历史最高峰。在这个时候，借这本小册子简单地讲讲美国大学的申请策略、专业的选择以及就业的分析，我们觉得很有必要。截止2010年4月15日（美国大学普遍接受的415联盟），留美学生的申请情况相比去年有了很大的变化，简单地总结为：录取还是很多，但是奖学金少了，文科和商科的研究生申请变得相对困难，高中申请本科的录取门槛更高了。国内现在关于美国大学的书和互联网上的名校简介可谓汗牛充栋，但大部分仍局限于英语学习指导、出国观感、“热门”专业追捧，或者写“札记/游记”性质的作品大谈名校典故、逸闻趣事，或板起面孔罗列入学条件。这对于鲜有机会身临其境了解美国学校情况的大部分中国同学来说，并没有多大帮助。一句话，对于一个学校，我们要说的和要看的就两个要点：一是该大学哪个专业的排名看好，中国学生去得较多而且有望申请（当然包括奖学金）成功；二是结合该专业的就业前景、该学校的口碑及地理位置，均衡考虑是否值得申请。
我反对某些留学机构组织一些所谓的“名校观摩团”或“赴美体验班”，原因很简单，花费一个月左右的时间和八九万人民币去美国某个大学或几个城市转悠体验，毫无益处。难道看看名胜古迹和坐在哈佛的课堂里被老美忽悠几个seminar，您就领悟了？为什么不静下心来做好学校的研究？
由于篇幅关系，本书只从高中生申请本科和本科同学申请硕博的角度，对美国排名前60的学校和专业进行简介，附录列出了综合排名到100名左右的学校、各个专业的排名以及排名比较靠前的文理学院信息，以供大家参考。本书主要介绍以下几点：
首先谈学校的学术优势与重点专业。所谓重点专业，很简单，就是在校本科生选该专业的人多，该专业开设的课程多且研究生奖学金和助学金多，就读的中国学生多。注意，任何会上网的人都能搜到某个大学的某专业排名到底好不好，但我们更关心的是中国学生往年的就读比例，其他信息应仅仅是参考。
其次，谈谈各专业近年的就业形势以及未来几年该专业在美国的就业前景。同时也简单介绍申请本科和申请硕博的一些策略。注意，由于美国大学本科的必修学分设置和主、副修的并行，通过观察一届毕业典礼或某次学生活动的参与人员来确定该校哪个专业比较热门是不理智的，大部分美国本科生读大学就是为了有一个融会贯通、通才兼备的教育环境。本科生的就业也是五花八门的，例如，学物理的最后成了历史老师，学文学的反倒成了律师，这样的例子太多，但恰恰说明了美国本科教育的强大，也指明了美国市场对本科人才的基本态度：通才赶紧上市，专才接着读研。因此，每一届的本科生都会有不同而多样化的人群，除了几个重点的专业，本科生的专业选择每年均有波动是正常的。尤其要提醒大家注意的是，对于准备赴美攻读本科的高中生同学来讲，专业选择是在大学二年级（Sophomore）的时候开始的。当然，你也可以在入学时选定一个专业，按照作者的经验，这样的同学反倒是变换专业最频繁的。一般来讲，你可以选择1个Major（专业），1~2个Minor（辅修）。毕业前的专业是可以调换的，但有一个前提，即换了专业后，你所修学分仍必须满足学校毕业要求。我在哥大读研期间曾给几个本科班级的同学讲过课，从我个人的经历看，本科学生学分课程是很繁重的，中途随便换专业或者没把必修学分上好就朝三暮四，很容易让你拿到几个难看的C甚至FAIL。因此，赴美攻读本科的同学在专业的选择上是其次的，而选择学校的综合排名和教育环境在其首。对于准备赴美攻读研究生（即MA、MS、PHD）的同学来说，专业（教授）选择在其首，区域选择在其次，而学校选择则更次之。大部分学校的专业排名在网上均可查到，尤其是基础科学和文科的专业排名，往往是四至五年内无太大变化，即使变化了也不必去理会它，为什么呢？因为某个教授不在了、项目取消了、业内小圈子内斗等，很正常。用一句简单的话来说，赴美攻读研究生的同学首要考虑的不是这个学校的名气和总体排名，而是一个公式组合：专业+教授+城市，然后附加考虑学校名声。具体的一些策略我会在本书中提到。
另外，随着美国签证的逐步放开以及美国经济的进一步衰退或滞涨，去美国留学已经成为新的一大热点，同学们无论是在申请本科、申请硕博连读或者是商/法学院，均会感觉到巨大的竞争压力。如果有机会，我希望能和同学们交流一些工作签证和美国移民法规的变化，以及对中国学生在美工作居留的影响。此次的金融危机不同以往，部分美国大学，尤其是那些小而精的文理学院以及各个州立大学将会受到很大的冲击，部分大学甚至会出现大幅调整入学标准（如严格设定州内学生比例等）及奖学金和助学金的情况。这对于准留学生来讲，既是机会，又是挑战，关键在于认真地规划申请。
本书没有重复网上可以搜集到的信息，书中内容是我们对每一个学校做了细致的调研与咨询的汇总，有的学校也是我们就读了多年的第二母校。现在各种留学中介鱼龙混杂、良莠不齐，在此提醒大家，和任何形式的教育（注意不是培训）一样，永远都应该是专家老师主导，学生家长全力配合的一个过程，任何流水线形式的操作都是不可取的。我希望本书能帮助大家在对比选择各个中介的服务时掌握尺度，同时对大家的留学准备有一些实质上的帮助。
