数码相机是一种能够拍摄，并通过内部处理把拍摄到的景物转换成数字格式图像的特殊照相机，如图13.14所示。与普通相机不同，数码相机不使用胶片，而是使用固定的或可拆卸的半导体存储器来保存获取的图像。数码相机可以直接连接到计算机、电视机或者打印机上。
对于相机而言，成像质量的优劣是最主要的因素。与传统相机不同，影响数码相机成像质量的因素有很多，其中镜头（光学特陛）、像素数目和色深（数字特陛）是最重要的。目前，可最大限度抑制成像的图形畸变、失真的非球面镜片已经在高档次数码相机中普遍应用，如佳能的Power ShotA5等，柯达的DC-2XX系列甚至可以实现不同倍数的光学变焦功能。
像素数目和色深是决定相机成像质量的数字性能因素。像素数目越多，拍摄出来的数字照片的分辨率就越高，照片越清晰。市场上主流数码相机的图像分辨率都在1024dpi×768dpi以上，完全可以胜任一般的打印和印刷需要。色深是指相机再现彩色的能力，当数码相机的每个像素拥有24bit彩色数据时，就可以再现1670万种颜色，这也是人眼识别的极限，并成为中档以上数码相机的基本要求。
与传统相机不同，数码相机的取景方式除去用传统的光学取景器取景外，也可采用LCD液晶显示屏取景。佳能PowerShotPr070和爱克发ePhoto1280的LCD显示屏甚至可以进行360度全方位旋转，极大地方便了拍摄的需要。只有LCD取景器的数码相机在拍摄色彩细节丰富的影像时，由于在表现色彩景深方面存在问题，无法正确反映出所拍摄景物的实际状况；若仅用光学取景器，则无法随时浏览相片，丧失了数码相机的便利性。因此，光学取景器和LCD取景器互为补充，在选购数码相机时，应该选择有两种取景方式的相机。这种类型的相机有Canon Power Shot A5Pr070、KodakDC25和理光RPC-2E等。
