达什伍德先生开头非常失望；但他性情愉快乐观，他满有希望能多活许多年，而且这已是一份大产业，如果省吃俭用，满可以从收益中存下不少钱，这样几乎很快就能改善家境。可是这姗姗来迟的好运，到他手上却只有一年时间，他就离开了人间，留给寡妻和女儿们的，包括已故老庄主留给她们的在内，只有一万镑。
一知道自己病危，达什伍德先生就把儿子找了来，他强支病体，急切地嘱咐儿子，要他照应好他的继母和妹妹们。
