Content Description

《查理第九时代轶事》是梅里美的长篇小说，以十六世纪查理九世时期著名的宗教惨案“圣巴托罗缪之夜”为题材，表现了中世纪封建专制的黑暗与残暴。主人公麦尔基是外省的胡格诺贵族青年， 1570年宗教和平后，他前往巴黎投奔新教首领海军上将柯里尼。麦尔基来到巴黎后遇见了分别多年，在内战中改变宗教信仰成为天主教徒的哥哥乔治。在国王的直接指挥下，对新教徒开始了屠杀。乔治拒绝执行血腥的命令，被投入监狱。麦尔基逃出巴黎，参加了胡格诺市罗舍尔城对国王的反抗。被释放出狱的乔治又被迫参加了国王围攻罗舍尔城的军队，在战场上，他遭到了麦尔基亲自指挥下的士兵的枪击。乔治死在自己弟弟的怀里，麦尔基也沉浸在莫大的痛苦中。作者在小说中揭露了当权的统治集团和天主教教会的虚伪和残忍，对本民族历史上的一次宗教迫害进行了无情的控诉。在教权主义猖獗的反动黑暗的复辟时期，《查理九世时代轶事》中的形象描写，无疑具有尖锐的针对性和现实的进步意义。

Author Description

普罗斯佩•梅里美（1803－1870），法国小说家、剧作家、历史学家、考古学家，是法国十九世纪富艺术魅力的作家之一，尤其在中短篇小说领域独树一帜。代表作有《卡尔曼情变断魂录》《马铁奥仗义斩子》等。《卡尔曼情变断魂录》经法国著名作曲家比才改编成歌剧《卡门》而取得世界性声誉。

“对这个名字我可一点儿也不生疏！”队长边叫，边向他的酒杯里斟酒，满满地斟了一杯，“我认得您的父亲，柏尔那尔．德．麦尔基先生；从最初几场战争起，我就结识了他，就像结交了一个知心朋友。
愿他身体健康，柏尔那尔先生。”队长端起酒杯，对他的部队说了几句德国话。当酒沾到他的嘴唇的时候，他的骑兵们个个把帽子向空抛掷，口里发出欢呼声。老板以为那是屠杀的信号，吓得双膝跪倒。柏尔那尔面临着这种异乎寻常的尊敬场面，自己也有一点儿惊奇，但是他认为必须为队长的健康而干杯来回答这日耳曼式的礼貌。
在他还没有到场以前，那几瓶酒已经喝得很可观，现在要再来一阵干杯，可就不够应付了。
“起来吧，伪君子，”队长掉转身子向跪在地上的老板说，“起来，去替我们找酒来。难道你看不见酒瓶是空空的吗？”掌旗官为了要对他证明这一点，就把一只空瓶子往他头上一扔。老板便奔到酒窖里去了。
“这人是极端的无礼，”麦尔基说，“不过如果这酒瓶打中了他，那么尽管您并不愿意叫他吃很大的苦，他还是吃了大苦头了。”“啊，哈！”掌旗官哄然大笑了一阵。
“一个天主教徒的脑袋，”密拉说，“还比这瓶子结实得多，虽然更加空洞些。”掌旗官越笑越厉害，所有在场的人都学着他笑，甚至麦尔基也笑了起来，不过他笑吉卜赛女人那副好看的嘴，甚于笑她所说的刻薄的笑话。

他过得非常之好：身体健康。这位可亲爱的人，他肚皮里还有二十场的内战要打哩！陛下那样另眼相看地对待他，弄得教皇的党羽个个满怀忧愤。”“真的，国王绝不可能充分地认识到他的功绩。
