寝室中传出轻声的呢喃，音量几乎在听力极限之下。那是一种不规律的声响，声音虽小但相当明确，而且相当有威胁性。

不过，并非这个声音吵醒拜伦·法瑞尔，将他从沉重、不宁的睡梦中拉回现实世界。此时，他正在不停地辗转反侧，想摆脱小桌上发出的一阵阵“嘟嘟”声，而他的努力却徒劳无功。

他一直没张开眼睛，只是笨手笨脚按下了开关。

“喂——”他咕哝了一声。

收话器中立刻有声音传出，听来既刺耳又响亮，拜伦却懒得将音量调低。

那声音说：“请找拜伦·法瑞尔好吗？”

拜伦终于张开眼睛，面对着周遭浓重的黑暗。他感到口干舌燥，并察觉室内有一丝徘徊不去的气味。

他答道：“我就是，请问哪位？”

那声音不理会他的回答，径自说下去，听得出越来越紧张，而且音量不算小：“有人在吗？我想找拜伦·法瑞尔。”

拜伦用一只手肘撑起身子，看准影像电话的位置，猛力拍了一下影像控制键，小小的荧幕便亮起来。

他说：“我就在这里。”荧幕上出现一张刮得干净、左右有点不对称的脸孔，他认出那是桑得·钟狄，“早上再打来吧，钟狄。”

他正准备关掉通话装置，钟狄又说：“喂，喂，有人在吗？这是不是大学楼，五二六室？喂。”

拜伦突然发现讯号输出电路的小指示灯没亮。他暗自咒骂一句，赶紧按下开关，指示灯却没有任何变化。这时钟狄终于放弃，荧幕变得空无一物，只剩下一块正方形的空洞光芒。

拜伦关上荧幕，然后趴下来，拱起双肩，试图再将脑袋埋进枕头里。他生气了，首先，谁也无权三更半夜对他大吼大叫。他瞥了一眼床头板上微亮的数字，现在是三点十五分。将近四小时后，室内的光线才会重新亮起。

此外，他不喜欢在完全黑暗的房间醒来。就算在地球上待了四年，他仍无法适应这里的传统建筑——全部采用钢筋混凝土，低矮、厚实、没有任何窗户。这是一种上千年的传统，可回溯到力场防护罩尚未发明、原始核弹依然无坚不摧的日子。

不过那已经是过去时。核战曾对地球造成莫大的危害，使大部分地区充满无法清除的放射性，变得毫无利用价值。如今情况坏到不能再坏，但建筑物依旧反映出古老的恐惧。因此当拜伦醒来时，四周是一片绝对的黑暗。

拜伦再度用手肘撑起身子。好像有什么不对劲，于是他顿了一下。他察觉的并非寝室中带有致命威胁的呢喃，而是某种或许更不容易引起注意，而且显然安全无数倍的东西。

他发现空气不再缓缓流动。平时空气总会不断更新，那简直是理所当然的事。他试着轻松地吞咽口水，结果做不到。即使情况已经明确了，室内的气氛仍有种压迫感。通风系统早已停止运作，现在他真不高兴了，他甚至不能用影像电话报告这件事。

为了确定起见，他又试了一次。乳白色的方形光芒再次闪现，在床上映出一团朦胧的珍珠色光辉。它仍能接收，却已无法发送讯号。好吧，没关系，反正天亮前，根本不可能找人来修理。他打了个呵欠，开始摸索他的拖鞋，又用掌根揉了揉眼睛。通风设备失灵，啊？这就能解释那种怪味道。他皱起眉头，使劲嗅了两三下。没有用，还是那种熟悉的味道，可是他无法找到来源。

他起身向浴室走去，自然而然伸手摸向电灯开关，虽然他只是要倒杯水，不一定真需要灯光。开关按下后，室内却黑暗依旧，他又气呼呼地试了几次。每样东西都坏了吗？他耸了耸肩，在黑暗中将水一饮而尽，立刻感觉舒服许多。走回寝室的时候，他又打了个呵欠，然后他试了试寝室的总开关，发现所有的电灯都不亮了。

拜伦坐在床沿，将一双大手放在肌肉结实的大腿上，开始思索这一切。通常，这种事值得跟管理人员好好理论一番。没人期望在大学宿舍受到酒店般的待遇，可是，太空啊，学生至少能要求一些最基本的效率。不过，现在这点也不怎么重要，毕业典礼在即，他的学业已经结束。三天后，他就要对这间宿舍说最后一声再见，同时，也要向地球大学与地球告别。
