《茶花女》是小仲马的成名作。这部作品兼有浪漫主义和现实主义的特色，是法国文学由浪漫主义向现实主义演变时期的作品。它为我们塑造了一些生动、鲜明的艺术形象，而其中突出、令人难忘的自然是女主人公茶花女玛格丽特。

Author Description

小仲马，（1824—1895），法国剧作家、小说家，其父亲为作家大仲马。小仲马是十九世纪末法国戏剧的三大领军人物之一。他的作品不以情节的曲折离奇取胜，而以真切自然的情理感人，结构严谨，富有抒情意味。小说《茶花女》是其具代表性的作品。他的戏剧代表作包括《半上流社会》《金钱问题》《私生子》《放荡的父亲》《克洛德的妻子》《福朗西雍》等。

李玉民，1939年生。1963年毕业于北京大学西方语言文学系，1964年作为新中国首批留法学生到法国勒恩大学进修两年，后任首都师范大学教授。教学之余，从事法国纯文学翻译三十余年，译著五十多种，约有一千五百万字。主要译著：小说有雨果的《巴黎圣母院》、《悲惨世界》，巴尔扎克的《幽谷百合》，大仲马的《三个火枪手》、《基督山伯爵》，莫泊桑的《一生》、《漂亮朋友》、《羊脂球》等；戏剧有《缪塞戏剧选》、《加缪全集·戏剧卷》等；诗歌有《艾吕雅诗选》、《阿波利奈尔诗选》等六本作品。此外，编选并翻译了《缪塞精选集》、《阿波利奈尔精选集》、《纪德精选集》；主编了《纪德文集》（五卷）、《法国大诗人传记丛书》（十卷）。在李玉民的译作中，有半数作品是由他首次介绍给中国读者的。他主张文学翻译是一种特殊的文学创作，译作应是给读者以文学享受的作品。李玉民“译文洒脱，属于傅雷先生的那个传统”（柳鸣九语）。

Book Abstract

《茶花女》：
第一章依我看，只有认真学习了一种语言，才可能讲这种语言，同样，只有多多研究了人，才可能创造出人物。
我还没有到能够编造故事情节的年龄，也就只好如实讲述了。
因此，我诚请读者相信本书故事的真实性，书中的所有人物，除了女主人公之外，都还在世。
此外，我所收集的有关事实，大多在巴黎都有见证人，他们可以出面证实，假如我的见证还不足以服人的话。再者，多亏了一种特殊的机缘，唯独我能够把这个故事记述下来，因为我是故事最后阶段的唯一知情人，而不了解最后阶段的详情细节，也就不可能写出一个完整的感人故事了。
这些详情细节，我是这样获知的。
那是一八四七年三月十二日，我在拉菲特街看到一大幅黄颜色的广告，是拍卖家具和珍奇古玩的消息，在物主去世之后举办的拍卖会。广告没有提及那位逝者的姓名，仅仅说明拍卖会将于十六日中午到下午五时，在昂坦街九号举行。
广告还注明，在十三日和十四日两天，感兴趣者可以去参观那套住房和家具。
我一向喜爱古玩，这次机会我决不错过，即使不买什么，至少也要去开开眼。
次日，我就前往昂坦街九号。
时间还早，不过那套房间已经进人参观了，甚至还有几位女士：她们虽然身穿丝绒衣裙，披着开司米披肩，乘坐的豪华大轿车就在门外等候，可是展现在眼前的豪华陈设，她们看着也不免惊诧，甚至感叹不已。
后来我才领会，她们为何那样感叹和惊诧了，因为，我一仔细观瞧，就不难发现自己进入了一名高级妓女的闺房。那些贵妇，如果说渴望亲眼看看什么的话，渴望看的也正是这类交际花的宅内闺房，而进入参观的恰恰有上流社会的女士。须知此类交际花，每天乘坐马车兜风，将泥水溅到贵妇的马车上，她们还到歌剧院和意大利人剧院，就坐在贵妇隔壁的包厢里，总之，她们肆无忌惮地在巴黎炫耀妖艳的美貌、炫目的珠宝首饰，以及风骚淫荡的生活。
女主人既已逝去，我得以置身于这套房中，就连最贞洁的女子也可以长驱直人了。死亡净化了这富丽堂皇之所的污浊空气。况且，真需要解释的话，这些最贞洁的女子也情有可原，说她们是来参加拍卖会，并不知道是谁的住宅，说她们看了广告，就想来瞧瞧广告所列的物品，以便事先选定，这种事再普通不过了。当然，她们在所有这些奇珍异宝之间，也无妨探寻这名交际花的生活痕迹。而此前，她们无疑听人讲过她那无比奇妙的身世。
只可惜，隐私也随女神一同逝去，那些贵妇无论怎样搜索，也仅仅看到逝者身后要拍卖的物品，丝毫也没有发现女房客生前出卖了什么。
不少东西自然值得一买。室内家具和陈设十分精美，有布尔制作的巴西香木家具、塞夫尔的和中国的瓷瓶、萨克森的小雕像，还有各种绸缎、丝绒和花边的衣物，可以说应有尽有。
我跟随先到的那些好奇的贵妇，在这套住宅里转悠。她们走进一间挂着帷幔的屋子，我刚要跟进去，却见她们笑着退出来，就好像为满足这种新的好奇心而感到羞愧，这反倒更加激发了我进屋瞧瞧的欲望。
这是一间梳妆室，还原样摆满极为精美的化妆用品，充分显示这女子生前何等穷奢极欲。
靠墙一张三尺宽、六尺长的大桌子上，欧科克和奥迪奥的珠宝制品闪闪发亮。真是一整套精美的收藏品，数以千计，都是这套居所的女主人不可或缺的，无一不是金银制品。然而，这么多收藏，只能是逐渐聚敛，绝非是一场艳情之功。
我看一名妓女的梳妆室，并不感到愤慨，而是饶有兴味地观赏，不管什么都看个仔细，发现所有这些精雕细琢的物品上，均有各自不同的徽记和姓氏的缩写字母。
所有这些东西，每一件都向我显示这个可怜姑娘的一次卖身，我边看边想道：上帝对她还相当仁慈，没有让她遭受通常的惩罚，而让她在年轻貌美和奢华生活中香消玉殒，须知年老色衰，是交际花的第一次死亡。
事实上，还有什么比放荡生活的晚景，尤其一个放荡女人的晚景，更为惨不忍睹的呢？这种晚景，尊严丧失殆尽，也丝毫引不起别人的关切。她们遗恨终生，但并不是痛悔走错了人生之路，而是悔不该毫无算计、挥霍了手中的金钱，这是让人最不忍卒听的事情。我就认识一个昔日的妓女：过去的风流不再，只留下一个女儿，据她同时代的人说，女儿差不多跟母亲年轻时同样漂亮。母亲将这可怜的孩子养大，如果不是为了命令她养老，就绝不会对她说：“你是我的女儿。”这个可怜的姑娘名叫路易丝，她顺从母意委身于人，并不出于自己的意愿，也毫无激情，毫无乐趣可言，就好像大人要她学会一种职业，她便干了那一行似的。
