惠斯特伯尔是座有着两千多年历史的繁忙港市，以盛产海蛎闻名。尽管有上流社会的种种限制，使毛姆与现实生活相隔绝。但他常常背着伯父，溜到港口和海滩，观察工人、渔民和流浪汉的被禁止的“粗俗行为”。每年深秋，当人们涌向肯特郡农村，帮忙采摘蛇麻子时，威利(毛姆)常常骑自行车到农业工人及其家庭临时搭建的帐篷周围，对他们无忧无虑的游牧式的生活感到既好奇又羡慕。他伯父不时地警告他，千万别跟这些农业季节工人及他们那些皮肤黝黑、不讲卫生、粗野放纵的孩子们接触。毛姆的这一经历再次表明了，现实的火热的生活是文艺创作的重要源泉。
