契诃夫是十九世纪末俄国伟大的批判现实主义作家、幽默讽刺大师、短篇小说艺术大师、著名的剧作家。他的主要创作领域为中短篇小说和戏剧，其中短篇小说成果犹丰，他和法国的莫泊桑，美国的欧?亨利齐名为三大短篇小说巨匠。
契诃夫的小说对小市民的庸俗、保守、空虚、自私和麻木的特性有着刻骨的憎恨，他深刻了解小市民的弱点，既贪婪又好逸恶劳；既向往奢华的生活又胆小怕事；这些小人物对人类、对未来很少关心，只在身边百无聊赖的琐事上寻找刺激。契诃夫的小说善于通过对这些小人物幽默可笑的描写进行艺术概括，塑造出完整的典型形象，以此来反映当时的社会现实。他的作品结构紧凑、情节生动、笔墨诙谐、寓意深刻，这些作品或嘲弄官场丑态，或调侃人生尴尬，亦庄亦谐，妙趣横生。
他一生创作了七百多篇短篇小说，本书所选的作品来自契诃夫创作的前后两个时期的代表作，包括读者比较熟悉的《变色龙》、《套中人》、《胖子和瘦子》、《小官吏之死》等。

Author Description

契诃夫（1860—1904），十九世纪末俄国现实主义文学流派的杰出代表，著名剧作家、短篇小说大师，被誉为“幽默讽刺大师”、“短篇小说艺术大师”，对世界文学的发展影响很大。

朱宪生，著名俄罗斯文学研究家、翻译家，上海师范大学教授、博士生导师。二十世纪八十年代中期留学苏联，攻研俄罗斯文学。主要译著有《俄罗斯抒情诗史》、《在诗与散文之间——论屠格涅夫的创作与文体》、《天鹅的歌唱——论俄罗斯作家》、《屠格涅夫传》、《普希金传》、《屠格涅夫全集》（合译）、《罪与罚》、《战争与和平》（合译）、《契诃夫短篇小说精选》等二十余部，对中国俄罗斯文学研究和翻译作出了卓越的贡献。

变色龙警督奥楚蔑洛夫穿着新大衣，手执公文包，正要穿过集市广场。一个长着棕红色头发的警员紧随其后，怀里抱着一个筐，里面装满了收缴来的醋栗。四周一片寂静……广场上什么人都没有。商铺和酒馆大门洞开，犹如一张张饥饿的大嘴，沮丧地望着上帝所创造的世界。附近连乞丐都没有一个。
“你竟敢咬人，你这该死的畜生！”奥楚蔑洛夫忽然听见有人说话，“伙计们，别放过它！如今咬人可是违法的！逮住它！嗨……嗨！”接着便听见了一阵狗的尖叫声。奥楚蔑洛夫往旁边一看，发现从商人彼楚金的木柴仓库里蹿出一条狗，一条腿是瘸的。它一边跑，一边不停地回头张望着。一个身穿印花衬衫和马甲的人紧随其后追了出来。
跑着跑着，他突然身子往前一倾，扑倒在地，抓住了狗的两条后腿。紧接着，再次响起了狗的尖叫声和人的喊叫声：“别放了它！”一张张带着睡意的脸从店铺里探出来，仿佛木柴仓库附近的地底下突然冒出来很多人似的，而且他们迅速地聚集在一起。
“看样子是出事了，长官！”警员说道。
奥楚蔑洛夫把身子左转九十度，不紧不慢地向人群走去。在木柴仓库附近，他看见那个刚刚追狗的人敞开马甲站在那儿，举着右手，伸出他那根血淋淋的手指头给大家看。他已经喝得半醉，脸上的表情仿佛在告诉那只小狗：“一会儿我要剥掉你的皮，坏蛋！”而那根举着的手指头，似乎成了他取胜的象征。奥楚蔑洛夫认出他是金匠赫留金。肇事的罪魁祸首——一条背上有块黄斑的机灵的白毛小狗，此时处在人群的中央，劈开前腿趴在地上，浑身在发抖。小狗眼泪汪汪的，眼中流露出痛苦和恐惧的神色。
“这里出了什么事？”奥楚蔑洛夫挤进人群问道。
“你为什么在这儿？干吗竖起手指头？……刚才是谁在大喊大叫？”“大人，我走在路上，也没招惹谁……”赫留金刚一开口说话，就用手捂住嘴巴咳嗽，“我去找米特里·米特里奇谈木柴的事，忽然，这个畜生无缘无故地咬了我的手指头一口……您知道，我是个靠干活儿吃饭的人……我的活儿又是细活儿。您得让人赔偿我的损失，因为……我的这根手指头也许一个星期都不能动……大人，法律上也没有这一条，说畜生咬了人，人就该忍着……要是日后人人都遭狗咬，那还不如死了好……”“嗯……好的……”奥楚蔑洛夫严厉地说，然后咳嗽了几声，搔了搔眉毛，“好的……这是谁家的狗？这事我管定了。我要给那些把狗放出来的人一点儿颜色看看！也该管管这些不愿遵守政府法令的老爷们了！只有处罚了这个浑蛋，他们才会从我这里知道，把狗或者别的宠物放出来是什么后果！我要给他一点儿颜色看看……耶尔德林，”警督对警员说，“你去调查调查，看看这是谁家的狗，然后做个记录！这条狗应该被处死，马上！这一定是条疯狗……我问你们，这是谁家的狗？”“这条狗，好像是希加洛夫将军家的！”人群中有个人说。
