许灵均没有想到还会见着父亲。
这是一间陈设考究的客厅，在这家高级饭店的七楼。窗外，只有一片空漠的蓝天，抹着疏疏落落的几丝白云。而在那儿，在那黄土高原的农场，窗口外就是绿色的和黄色的田野，开阔而充实。他到了这里，就像忽然升到云端一样，有一种晃晃悠悠的感觉，再加上父亲烟斗里喷出的青烟像雾似的在室内飘浮，使眼前的一切更如同不可捉摸的幻觉了。可是，父亲吸的还是那种包装纸上印着印第安酋长头像的烟斗丝，这种他小时候经常闻到的、略带甜味的咖啡香气，又从嗅觉上证实了这不是梦，而是的的确确的现实。
“过去的就让它过去吧！”父亲把手一挥。20世纪30年代初期他在哈佛取得学士学位以后，一直保持着在肯布里季时的气派。现在，他穿着一套花呢西服，翘着腿坐在沙发上。“我一到大陆，就学会了一句政治术语，叫‘向前看’。你还是快些准备出国吧！”
房里的陈设和父亲的衣着使他感到莫名的压抑。他想，过去的是已经过去了，但又怎能忘记呢？
整整三十年了。也是这样一个秋天，他捏着母亲写的地址，找到霞飞路上的一所花园洋房。阵雨过后，泛黄的树叶更显得憔悴，滴滴水珠及围墙里的法国梧桐上滴落下来。围墙上拉着带刺的铁丝；大门也是铁的，涂着严峻的灰色油漆。他按了很长时间门铃，铁门上才打开一方小小的窗口。他认得这个门房，正是经常送信给父亲的人。门房领着他，经过一条两旁栽着冬青的水泥路，进到一幢两层楼洋房里的起居室。
那时，父亲当然比现在年轻多了，穿着一件米黄色的羊毛坎肩，手肘倚在壁炉上，低着头抽烟斗。壁炉前面的高背沙发上，坐着母亲成天诅咒的那个女人。
“这就是那个孩子？”他听见她问他的父亲，“倒是挺像你的。来，过来！”
他没有过去，但不由自主地瞥了她一眼。他记得他看见了一对明亮的眼睛和两片涂得很红的嘴唇。
“有什么事？嗯？”父亲抬起头来。
“妈病了，她请你回去。”
“她总是有病，总是……”父亲愤然离开壁炉，在地毯上来回走着。地毯是绿色的，上面织有白色的花纹。他的眼睛追踪着父亲的脚步，强忍住不让泪水流出来。
“你跟你妈说，我等一下就回去。”父亲终于站在他面前。但他知道这个答复是不可靠的，母亲在电话里听过不止一次了。他胆怯而固执地要求：“她要您现在就回去。”
“我知道，我知道……”父亲把手搭在他肩膀上，轻轻地把他推向门口，“你先回去，坐我汽车回去。要是你妈病得厉害，叫她先去医院。”父亲送他到前厅，突然，又很温存地摸着他的头，嗫嚅地说，“你要是再大一点就好了，你就懂得，懂得……你妈妈，很难和她相处。她是那样，那样……”他扬起脸，看见父亲蹙皱着眉，一只手不住地擦着额头，表现出一种软弱的、痛苦的神情，反而有点可怜起父亲来。
