就在这时，跑来了一只狐狸。
“你好。”狐狸说。
“你好。”小王子很有礼貌地答道。他转过身，可是没看到任何人。
“我在这里，在苹果树底下。”那个声音说。
“你是谁？”小王子问，“你真美。”
“我叫狐狸。”狐狸说。
“来跟我一块儿玩吧，”小王子提议说，“我非常难过……”
“我不能跟你一起玩，”狐狸说，“我并不是被驯化的动物。”
“哦！很抱歉。”小王子说。
想了片刻，小王子接着说：
“什么叫‘驯化’呢？”
“你不是这里的人？”狐狸说，“你来这里找什么？”
“我来寻找人。”小王子说，“什么才叫‘驯化’呢？”
“人啊，”狐狸说，“他们都有枪，还狩猎，这真可恶！他们也养鸡，这是他们仅有的好处。你也是来找鸡的吗？”
“不是的，”小王子说，“我是来找伙伴的。什么才叫‘驯化’呢？”

“请你把我驯化吧！”他说。

“一个人只有驯化了某样东西，才可能真正了解它。”狐狸说，“人没有时间去认识别的事物。他们常常到商人那儿去买准备好的东西。由于世上还没有出售友谊的商店，因此人没有朋友。假如你想得到一个朋友，那就驯化我吧！”
“那么我应该做些什么呢？”小王子说。
“你要很有耐心。”狐狸说，“首先你要坐在草丛里，坐得离我略远一点儿，我会偷偷地看看你。你什么都别说，语言是误解的源泉。不过，每天，你都要坐得离我更近一点儿……”第二天，小王子又来了。
“你每天最好在同一时刻来。”狐狸说，“比如说，你下午四点来，那么从三点钟开始，我便会觉得幸福。时间越接近四点，我就越觉得幸福。到四点钟时，我就会坐立不安，非常着急；我就会明白幸福的价值。可是，假如你每天来的时间不同，我就不知道应该在几点开始期待你的到来……我们需要有一定的仪式。”

于是，小王子把狐狸驯化了。转眼他们就要分别了。
“唉！”狐狸说，“我肯定会哭泣的。”
“这是你的不对，”小王子说，“我原本一点儿也不想让你难过，但你却让我驯化你……”
“是的。”狐狸说。
“你却想哭泣了！”小王子说。
“当然了。”狐狸说。
“那么你一无所获。”
“不，我得到了麦子的颜色，所以我还是有所收获的。”狐狸说。
接着，狐狸继续说：“再去探望一下那些玫瑰花吧。你将会明白，你的那朵花是世上唯一的玫瑰。你回来与我道别的时候，我会告诉你一个秘密。”
于是小王子就去探望那些玫瑰。
“你们和我的那朵玫瑰是不一样的，你们对于我来说什么都不是！”小王子对她们说，“谁也没有驯化你们，同样你们也没有驯化什么人。你们就像我的狐狸之前那样，它那个时候只是和千万只其他的狐狸完全一样的一只狐狸。可是，我如今已经把它看成了我的朋友，于是它如今是世上独一无二的了。”
此时，那些玫瑰花非常不自在。
“你们很美，可你们也很空虚。”小王子依旧对她们说，
“没有人会为你们而死。当然了，我的那朵玫瑰花，一般的路人会认为她和你们毫无差别。但是，她比你们全部加起来都要重要，因为是我为她浇水；是我为她罩上玻璃罩；是我用屏风呵护她；是我为她除去身上的毛毛虫（除了剩下两三只为了变蝴蝶的以外）。因为我聆听过她的抱怨和吹嘘，甚至有的时候我会看着她默不作声的模样。因为她是我的玫瑰。”
他又返回到狐狸那儿。
“再见。”小王子说。
