在故事《格里吉娅》中，男主人公从城市来到荒野，在一种激情中爱上了农妇格里吉娅，但在格里吉娅在其丈夫归来时，将男主人公堵在了荒野的山洞里。第二个故事《葡萄牙女人》中，葡萄牙女人是男主人公凯滕老爷的妻子，男人长期在外征战，获得胜利时归来，但却染上重病，将近垂危，夫妻关系也非常微妙；这时妻子豢养的一只猫受到折磨死去，他从中得到启示，决心翻越城堡中一道无法攀越的高墙，*终重新获得了力量和健康。*后一个故事《佟卡》以一个无名男主人公“他”的视角，回忆了他和佟卡从相识、相知、直到*后悲剧结尾的过程，故事以佟卡在医院的病逝而结束，小说清晰地展示了男性和女性之间的感官和认知差异。

Author Description

罗伯特·穆齐尔（1880—1942），奥地利作家，二十世纪重要的小说家之一。他的巨著《没有个性的人》，与《追忆似水年华》《尤利西斯》并列，成为现代主义文学的经典作品。

穆齐尔出生在奥匈帝国的黄昏年代，家世良好。在写作生涯中，他没有得到应得的荣誉。去世之时，他的骨灰撒在流亡地日内瓦的树林间，身后只留下两箱手稿。

霍莫的小儿子久病不愈，拖了一年，病情既无好转也未见恶化，医生要求长期疗养，霍莫却怎么也下不了陪同的决心。他觉得那样一来他就得和他自己、他的书籍、计划还有生活分开太久。他感到他的抵触自私透顶，但这或许是种自我解脱，因为他过去离开妻子从未曾超过一天；他曾经深爱她，他依然深爱她，但孩子让这种爱变得可以分割了，像水底的石头，日夜遭流水冲蚀，被越冲越远。这一可分割的新特性令霍莫惊诧莫名，但他的知识和意志不会让他的爱有丝毫减损。在动身前的全部准备时间里，他想也没想过孤身一人将如何度过即将到来的夏天，只是无比厌恶海滨浴场和山区。他独自留在了家里。第二天他收到一封信，信中邀请他入股一家准备重新开采弗森那峡谷的威尼斯旧金矿公司。寄信人名叫莫扎特·阿马迪奥·霍芬格特，几年前他在一次旅途中与他相识，几天之内就成了朋友。

霍莫自己也说不清他究竟为了什么不住旅店，而是住进了霍芬格特的一位意大利熟人家里。那里有三样东西吸引了他。一是红木树皮制作的床，漂亮松软，无比凉爽；一是糊墙纸上的图案，十分紊乱、难看，一望可知尚未画完。还有一张芦苇做的逍遥椅，坐在椅子上晃荡，观看糊墙纸，整个人会变成上下翻滚的块状物，两秒钟内由虚无里钻出、长大，而又转瞬即逝。

街头的空气洋溢着雪和南方的混和气息。时值五月中旬，一到晚上，大型弧光灯光芒四射，弧光灯挂在横系的绳子上，高高的，灯下的街道宛如深蓝色峡谷，你不得不在那幽暗的谷底行走，而头顶的宇宙里是炽白的太阳在咝咝作响地旋转。

白天能看见葡萄园和森林，熬过了严冬，它们红黄绿交杂，因为这些树不落叶，枯萎和新生并存，像公墓上的花圈，坐落其中的小别墅或红或蓝或玫瑰色，一目了然，恰似不同颜色的骰子被不带感情地以一种他们不熟悉的、奇特的组合法则掷在那里。
