Author Description

詹姆斯 P. 沃麦克（James P. Womack），曾为美国麻省理工学院资深教授，为企业提供精益咨询，也向小型制造厂投资。他创办了精益企业研究所（LEI）并担任所长，这家研究所是一个非营利教育和研究机构，致力于精益思想的传播和应用。

丹尼尔 T. 琼斯（Daniel T. Jones），创办了英国精益企业研究院（LEA）并担任院长。这家研究院分担了精益企业研究所在提升精益意识方面的任务，并将精益知识应用于一系列的行业。

Introduction

《改变世界的机器》是一本历久弥新的经典之作。
它最早发表在1990年，主要讲述两种生产方式——大批量生产和精益生产的差异，当时，丰田的销售额只是通用汽车的一半，是福特汽车的2/3。2007年再版时，丰田公司的汽车销量已经超过了福特汽车公司，并紧追通用汽车。随着时间的推移，2014年年初，当我们再次翻译这本研究著作，丰田公司的销售额已经以998万辆雄踞全球销量第一。
如果说25年前，几十位学者和专家花费5年时间的潜心调查，在当时还只是一篇研究论著的话，历史演进至今，事实进一步证实了——精益管理是丰田制胜的法宝，精益同样也能引领其他的企业走向成功。
我接触精益生产是自一次管理层的精益理念培训开始的，虽然作为销售总经理，本不应该对这个生产管理方法感兴趣，但当我一天听下来，便不知不觉地被精益生产的魅力征服了。现在，我作为跨国公司的全球高级副总裁，不仅在自己服务的企业里大力推广精益生产理念，而且利用业余时间在商学院和各种管理论坛上津津乐道，播撒精益生产之种，弘扬精益生产之道。
所以，当我接到机械工业出版社的翻译邀约时，便毫不犹豫地欣然接受。通过逐字逐句的译校，让我对前辈们严谨的治学态度和科学的研究方法深深敬佩。
