亨利·戴维·梭罗（1817-1862），美国超验主义作家、哲学家。他于1845年春天，在老家康科德城瓦尔登湖边林中建起一座木屋，从此日出而作——耕作，日落也作——写作。1847年，完成了《瓦尔登湖》的初稿，后又历经五年的反复修改、增补、润饰，终于向世人奉献出这部不朽之作《瓦尔登湖，或林居纪事》。
作者在书中详尽描述了他在瓦尔登湖畔林中度过的两年又两个月的生活以及期间他的许多思考。他把这次经历称为简朴隐居生活的一次尝试。

Author Description

《瓦尔登湖（译文名著精选）》：
让我们略费片刻，思考一下，我在前文提及的麻烦和焦虑，十之八九是些什么，有多少需要我们烦心，或者至少还得小心应对。我们尽管置身于一种徒有其表的文明之中，若能过上一种原生态的、开拓疆土的生活，还是颇有裨益，即使仅仅为了闹明白大量生活必需品是些什么，要用什么方法方可获得这些必需品；或者，甚至只消翻一翻商人的旧账本，看看人们在商店里买得最多的是什么，商店里存货是什么，也就是说，存量最大的杂货是什么。因为，时代固然在进步，但它对人类生存的基本法则并没有多大影响；就像我们的骨骼同我们祖先的骨骼相比，大抵也没有多大差别。
依我看，生活必需品，是指人通过自己的努力所获得的一切，或者换句话说，它从一开始（或者经过长期使用）就对人类生活变得如此须臾不可离，因此，没有哪个人，不管是出于野蛮、贫困还是哲学上的缘故，试图不靠它，独个儿地过活，即使有这样的人，那也是寥寥无几。许多人认为，从这个意义上讲的生活必需品只有一种，那就是一食物。对大草原上的美洲野牛来说，那就是几英寸长、可咀嚼的青草，可饮用的水，此外还要在森林里或者山阴处寻摸栖身之地。野兽需要的，不外乎是食物和栖身之地。在这个气候区，人的生活必需品可以极其精确地分为几大类：食物、住所、衣服和燃料；因为只有获得以上这些东西，我们方才可以自由地考虑真正的人生问题，并有望取得成功。人类发明不仅有房子，还有衣服、熟食；也许是偶然发现烤火可以取暖，后来使用了火，起先被看成是一种奢侈品，到目前围火取暖也成为一种必需品了。我们已看到，猫狗也都获得了这种第二天性。我们只要住处合宜，穿着适当，就能合理地保持体内的热量；可是，如果说我们住处过暖，穿着过厚，或者燃料消耗过多，也就是说，外部的热量大大地超过我们体内的热量，那岂不是说在烘烤人体了吗？自然科学家达尔文谈到火地岛的原住民时说，他自己那一伙人穿得很厚实，围坐在火堆边一点儿也不觉得热，那时一丝不挂的野蛮人在离火堆老远的地方待着，达尔文惊讶地发现他们却被“烘烤得竟然汗流浃背”。同样，据说新荷兰人赤身裸体走来走去，若无其事似的，而欧洲人穿了衣服还冷得瑟瑟发抖。这些野蛮人的体质铁硬，和文明人的智质聪明，难道说不可以相互结合在一起吗？根据李比希的说法，人体是一座火炉，食物即是维持肺内消耗的燃料。我们冷天吃得多些，热天就吃得少些。动物体内的热量是内部消耗缓慢的结果，内耗太陕，就会出现疾病和死亡；或者换句话说，由于缺乏燃料，通风装置出了毛病，火就会熄灭。当然，生命的体温与火是不能混为一谈的，但作为比喻也就只好到此为止。因此，从前文所述来看，动物生命这个词儿和动物体温这个词儿几乎可作同义词用；因为食物可以被看成维持我们体内之火不熄的燃料——而燃料只不过用来煮熟食物，或者说从体外来增加我们的体温——此外，住处和衣服也只是保持由此产生和吸收的热量。
因此，就人体来说，最大的必需品就是保暧，保持生命的热量。我们为此就得何等含辛茹苦，不仅为了获取食物、衣服和住所，而且还要寻摸床铺，也就是我们的睡衣，从鸟巢和飞鸟的胸脯上掠夺羽毛来打造这个住所里头的栖身之地，就像鼹鼠在地洞尽头拿杂草和树叶子做窝儿一样!穷人动不动就发牢骚，说这是一个寒冷的世界；我们的大部分疾病，不论生理上的也好，社会上的也好，我们干脆都归罪于饱受风寒。在一些气候区，夏天会让人过上一种天上乐园似的生活。那时节，燃料除了煮熟他的食物以外，也就不是必需品了；对他而言，太阳就像是一团火，许多果实给太阳的光线煮熟了；—般来说，食物的品种繁多，而且又是唾手可得，衣服和住所已是完全用不着，或者说部分用不着。时下在这个国家，根据我的亲身经历，我觉得只要有几件工具：一把刀，一柄斧头，一把铁锹，一辆手推车，等等，就可以过日子了。
对于好学之士，另添一盏灯，一些文具，再加上几本书，这些均属次要的必需品，稍微花上几个铜子儿就能获得。但是，有些人不太聪明，跑到地球的另一边，到了蛮荒和肮脏的地区，一门心思地做上一二十年生意，为了谋生——就是说，为了追求舒适温暖一可到头来还是魂归新英格兰。奢侈的富人不只是得到令人舒适的暖和，而是热得太过反常；正如我前文所说的，他们肉体是在烘烤来着，不消说，是很切合时尚的方式在烘烤。
