Book Abstract

这一句话写的是日军投降，但是那跳接的意象，那武断而迅疾的句法，却是现代诗的作风。换了第二代的散文家，大半不会这么写的。
张晓风的一枝健笔纵横于近二十年来的文坛，先是以散文成名，继而转向小说，不久又在戏剧界激起壮阔的波澜，近年她的笔锋又收回散文的领域，而更见变化多姿。她在散文创作上的发展，正显示一位年轻作家如何摆脱了早期新文学的束缚，如何锻炼了自己的风格，而卓然成为第三代的名家。早在十三年前，我已在《我们需要几本书》一文中指出：“至少有三个因素使早期的晓风不能进入现代：中文系的教育，女作家的传统，五四新文学的余风。我不是说，凡出身中文系、身为女作家，且承受五四余泽的人，一定进不了现代的潮流。我只是说，上述的三个背景，在普通的情形下，任具一项，都足以阻碍现代化的倾向。晓风三者兼备，竟能像跳栏选手一样，——越过，且奔向坦坦的现代大道，实在是难能可贵的。” 十三年后回顾晓风在散文上的成就，比起当日来，自又丰收得多，再度综览她这方面的作品，欣赏之余，可以归纳出如下的几个特色：第一，晓风成名是一九六。年代的中期，那时正是台湾文坛西化的高潮，她的作品却能够免于一般西化的时尚，既不乱叹人生的虚无，也不沉溺文字的晦涩。第二，她出身于中文系，却不自囿于所谓“旧文学”，写起文章来，既少恆钉其表的四字成语或经典名言，也无以退为进以酸为雅的谦虚作态。相反地，她对于西方文学颇留意吸收，在剧本的创作上尤其如此。读她的散文，实在看不出是昧于西洋文学的作家所写。第三，她是女作家，却能够摆脱许多女作家，尤其是一些散文女作家常有的那种闺秀气，其实从《十月的阳光》起，她的散文往往倒有一股勃然不磨的英伟之气。她的文笔原就无意于妩媚，更不可能走向纤弱，相反地，她的文气之旺，笔锋之健，转折之快，比起一些阳刚型的男作家来，也毫不减色。第四，一般的所谓散文家，无论性别为何，笔下的题材常有日趋狭窄之病，不是耽于山水之写景，就是囿于家事之琐细，旧闻之陈腐，酬酢之空虚，旅游之肤浅，久之也就难以为继。晓风的散文近年在题材上颇见拓展，近将出版的《你还没有爱过》一书可以印证她的精神领域如何开阔。在风格上，晓风能用知性来提升感性，在视野上，她能把小我拓展到大我，仍能成为有份量有地位的一流散文家。
《你还没有爱过》里面的十五篇散文，至少有八篇半是写人物——《承受第一线晨曦的》只能算是半篇。这些人物，有的是文化界已故的前辈，像洪陆东、俞大纲、李曼瑰、史惟亮；有的是曾与晓风协力促进剧运的青年同伴，像姚立含、黄以功；更有像温梅桂那样奋斗自立的泰雅尔族山胞。后面的三个人物写得比较详尽，但也不是正式的传记。前面的四个名人则见首而不见尾，天矫云间，出没无常，只是一些生动的印象集锦。而无论是速写或详叙，这些人物在晓风的笔下，都显得亲切而自然，往往只要几下勾勒，颊上三毫已见。晓风的笔触，无论是写景、状物、对话或叙事，都是快攻的经济手法，务必在数招之内见功，很少细针密线的工笔。所以她的段落较短，分段较多，事件和情调的发展爽利无碍，和我一般散文的长段大阵，颇不相同。晓风的文笔还有一项能耐，便是雅俗、文白、巧拙之间的分寸，能依主题的需要而调整，例如写青宿洪陆东时的老练，便有别于《蜗牛女孩》的坦率天真。
几篇写人物的散文之中，我认为味道最浓笔意最醇的，是《半局》和《看松》。这两篇当然不是传记，而是作者一鳞半爪的切身感受和亲眼印象，却安排得恰到好处，真有“传神”之功。也许晓风和文中的两位人物——一位是她的系主任，一位是同事——相知较深，所以往事历历，随手拈来，皆成妙谛，比起其他人物的写照来，更见突出。我认为这种散闻轶事串成的人物剪影，形象生动，意味隽永，是介于《史记》列传和《世说新语》之间的笔法，希望晓风以后多加发挥。尤其是《半局》一篇，墨饱笔酣，六干字一气呵成，其中人物杜公的意态呼之欲出，不但是晓风个人的杰作，也是近年来散文的妙品。我甚至认为，《半局》的老到恣肆之处，鲁迅也不过如此。
