他的代表作《先知》一出版就引起了轰动，欧美评论家将它与泰戈尔的《吉檀迦利》并论，称之为“东方极为美妙的声音”。在《先知》中，纪伯伦创造了一个充满睿智的东方哲人的形象。他滞留西方奥法利斯城十二载，终于盼到回归自己东方故土的日子。在他登船归去之前，向依依惜别的城民作了情深意长的临别赠言，并回答了他们提出的有关爱与憎、生与死、哀与乐、美与丑、情与理、罪与罚、给与取、劳与逸、善与恶等二十六个问题，这些问题几乎涉及了人类精神生活和物质生活的全部领域。
纪伯伦首先是位画家，其次才是一位作家，绘画与写作是他的两条创作主线。他曾为自己的诗歌创作了不少插画，本书收录了他的这些经典画作，以飨读者。

Author Description

卡里·纪伯伦（1883—1931），诗人、作家、画家，二十世纪阿拉伯新文学道路的开拓者之一，被称为“黎巴嫩文坛骄子”。纪伯伦十二岁时随母去美国波士顿，进入侨民学校。两年后回国学习阿拉伯文、法文和绘画。其间曾创办《真理》杂志，态度激进。1908年发表小说《叛逆的灵魂》，由于大胆地宣扬叛逆和反抗，纪伯伦被土耳其当局吊销了“国籍”，被教会开除了教籍，作品遭到查禁焚毁。他再次前往美国，后去法国，在巴黎艺术学院学习绘画和雕塑，并在巴黎春季传统画展获得银奖。1911年重返波士顿，次年迁往纽约，专门从事文学艺术创作活动。他组织和领导了由旅美作家参加的笔会，成为旅美派的代表作家。逝世后，他的遗体被运回祖国，在家乡安葬。
纪伯伦一生热爱自己的民族语言和艺术，关注自己的民族和祖国，但是他明确表达过，不关心政治，不怀政治抱负，他说：“整个地球都是我的祖国，全部人类都是我的乡亲。”

于是艾尔梅特拉说，请给我们谈谈爱吧。
他抬头望着众人，人群一片寂静。他用洪亮的声音说道：
当爱挥手召唤你们时，跟随着他，
尽管他的道路艰难而险峻。
当他展翼拥抱你们时，依顺着他，
尽管他羽翼中的利刃会伤害你们。
当他对你们说话时，要相信他，
尽管他的声音会击碎你的梦，像狂风尽扫园中的花。
爱虽可为你们加冕，也能将你们钉上十字架。他虽可助你们成长，也能将你们削砍剪刈。
他会攀至你们的高处，轻抚你们在阳光下颤动的最柔嫩的枝条，
他也会降至你们的根柢，动摇你们紧紧依附着大地的根须。
爱把你们像麦捆般聚拢在身边。

艾尔梅特拉又开口问道：婚姻又是怎样的呢，大师?
他回答道：
你们一同降生，你们将永远相依。
当死神的白色羽翼驱散你们的日子，你们也应在一起。
的确，你们始终相守，即使在上帝的记忆中。
但在聚守中你们要保留空间，
让空中的风在你们之间飞舞。
彼此相爱，但不要让爱成为束缚；
让爱成为奔流于你们灵魂海岸间的大海。
盛满彼此的杯盏，但不要只从一只杯盏中取饮。

黎巴嫩诗人纪伯伦，作为阿拉伯现代文学和东方现代文学的一位杰出代表，在我国备受瞩目和尊敬。他的散文诗创作，特别是《先知》，在我国众多读者中享有盛誉，被视为珍品。近二十年来，我国翻译出版了他的大量作品，但仍然供不应求，可见受到欢迎的程度。

在国际上，纪伯伦的声名也与日俱增。他的英文作品在世界各地本来已流传很广，最近二三十年他的阿拉伯文作品也大量地被译为英文、法文等，广为传诵。最近，在美国马里兰大学召开了第一届纪伯伦国际学术研讨会，我应邀参加，对纪伯伦在东方和西方的影响有了更深切的感受。这次会议把纪伯伦的思想和文学艺术创作同人类前进的道路联系起来，同二十一世纪的“和平文化”发展联系起来，对纪伯伦作出了很高的评价。这次会议的组织者、马里兰大学纪伯伦研究项目负责人布沙鲁伊教授指出：“纪伯伦发展了一种超越东西方障碍的独特思想，他的作品传达的信息和塑造的形象，在具有不同文化背景的人们中产生了共鸣。”教授认为，“凡是伟大诗人应该传达的信息，纪伯伦都传达到了”。他还说，“在所有现代作家中很难找到比纪伯伦更加致力推动全球和平文化的人”。

纪伯伦作品之所以受到全世界的欢迎，能给人留下深刻印象，是因为他的深沉的哲学思考和火一般的激情，但也许更为重要的是，他对一切俗见提出了质询，表示了怀疑或否定，从而为人们认识社会、认识自身，提供了一种新的视角。他的作品不仅仅是让人愉悦的，更是促人思考的。

从一九二三年《文学周刊》刊登茅盾先生选译的纪伯伦五篇短文开始，中国读者就与纪伯伦结缘了，算起来我们已有七十六年的“缘分”。在这漫长的交往中，特别是在最近二十年，中国读者逐渐认识了他，理解了他，体会到他文学艺术的魅力，领略到他独特思想的精髓。然而，对于新一代读者，纪伯伦仍然是一个崭新的世界，仍然是一位陌生的对话者。在匆匆忙忙、眼花缭乱的世界中，能静下心来读纪伯伦，和纪伯伦对话，对有

些青年人来说可能是一件难事。但当他真正坐下来细细品味时，他会体验到一种惊喜，一种升华，他的境界和视野可能会更加开阔起来，最后他也许会说：“噢，读纪伯伦的书真是一种享受!”

创造与交流是人类进步的两大动力。一个民族要发展，要前进，不但要大胆创造，而且要积极交流。文化交流，包括文学交流，是一个走上文明大道的民族的必然要求。一个民族文明程度愈高，对文化交流的需求就愈强烈，行动上也就愈自觉。我们的文学翻译家，我们的出版家，是文化交流的使者，是鲁迅提倡的“拿来主义”的实践者，是架设通向各国人民精神世界大桥的义工。当我们把一部又一部外国文学作品介绍给中国读者时，我们正在尽自己“世界公民”的义务和责任。而冲破精神上的“国界”，自由交往，正是纪伯伦当年所追求、所企盼的。

因为写了《先知》而常常被热爱他的人称为“先知”的纪伯伦，的确在思想领域、文学领域和艺术领域有不凡的建树。作为东方智者，他确实发现并道出了一些至今仍有现实意义的真理。通过《先知》主人公艾勒-穆斯塔法的训诫和忠告，我们可以看出纪伯伦理想世界的蓝图，可以发现一个人与自然、人与人和谐相处的美好社会。纪伯伦要做真理的发现者。但并不做思想的垄断者。他坚持认为，真理需要两个人来发现：一个是说者，一个是听者。他所说的“听者”，当然也包括看者，阅读者。他调侃道：“人用眼睛听，有人用肚子听，有人用钱袋听，有人则根本不听!”只有用“心”去听、用“心”去看的人，才能有所发现、有所收获，才能为发展真理贡献自己的一份力量。在纪伯伦的作品中还有一些被他比作“雾霭”的未成形的思想，更需要我们细心去听，细心去看，只有这样才能把握纪伯伦内在的蕴涵和发现其属于未来的东西。

纪伯伦是一个内涵丰富的阅读对象，也是一个内涵复杂的研究对象。人们提到纪伯伦时，往往把他定位于一个“爱与美的诗人”。“爱与美”确实是纪伯伦散文诗的重要主题，将之定位于“爱与美的诗人”也是有一定道理的，但仅仅作如此描述就失之于片面了。因为纪伯伦也有金刚怒目的一面，他的反叛性、斗争性在整个阿拉伯文学史上恐怕是罕见的。他对腐败权力的揭露，对宗教偏见的鞭笞，对传统和民族性中消极面的挞伐，其力度超过了他同时代的任何作家。他的坦率、直露，毫不妥协的战斗精神，至今仍能起到鼓舞同胞的作用。对于这一点，我们的研究者应该给予充分的注意。

纪伯伦一八八三年一月六日生于黎巴嫩的贝什里，一九三一年四月十日逝于美国纽约，他只活了短短四十八个春秋。他的英年早逝，不论从当时看，还是从现在看，都是东方文学乃至世界文学的重大损失。然而令我们感到安慰的是，他毕竟留下了如此多的文学艺术遗产，以供我们分享。我们记得，当年纪伯伦曾为自己精神之树硕果累累却无人采摘而哀叹。然而，今天的情况就大为不同了。今天的世界，不论东方还是西方，争先恐后采摘纪伯伦这棵大树果实的人实在是太多了。要是纪伯伦能活到今天，或者像他所应许的那样轮回转世到这个世界，他又该发出怎样的感叹啊!

我国的纪伯伦译介和研究，在这短短的二十多年中取得了令世界惊诧的业绩，这一点在马里兰大学的首届纪伯伦国际学术研讨会上已得到肯定。但是我始终认为，纪伯伦只是阿拉伯现代文学中的一个闪光点，尽管是一个最明亮的点，但也不是全部。我们要全面了解阿拉伯文学，就必须全面介绍阿拉伯作家，而不要满足于停留在某一个点上。我希望，在集中推出纪伯伦后，我国的翻译界和出版界能把目光投向更多的阿拉伯作家，更多的东方作家。我同时希望，我们的阿拉伯文学、东方文学研究，也会随之有一个大的发展，从而在国际文化交流中找到并确立我们应有的位置。
