Author Description

圣·埃克苏佩里（Saint Exupéry），法国作家、飞行员，生于法国里昂，以童话《小王子》闻名于世。他曾报考海军学院，未能如愿，却有幸成了空军的一员,而且还是法国早一代飞行员之一。退役后，先后从事过各种不同的职业，后进入拉泰科埃尔航空公司。曾出版《南方邮件》《夜航》《人类的大地》《给一个人质的信》《小王子》等作品，有“蓝天白云的耕作者”之称。1944年7月31日执行一次飞行任务时失踪。

我对大人的看法

我六岁的时候，有一次读了一本关于原始森林的书，书名叫《自然界的真实故事》。在那本书里我看到一幅惊心动魄的图画。画面上是一头蟒蛇正在吞食一头动物。我把那幅画临摹在这里。

书中还说：“蟒蛇不经咀嚼，将食物囫囵吞下。然后身体动弹不得，需要长眠六个月进行消化。”

读罢，我陷入了沉思，想象着热带丛林里的种种奇观险境。然后，我捏着彩笔，经过一番努力，成功地创作出了我的第一幅图画。我的“作品一号”。它是这样的：

我把我的杰作拿给大人看，并问他们，这幅图画是不是把他们吓坏了。

可是他们回答：“吓坏？为什么要被一顶帽子吓坏呢？”

我画的不是一顶帽子。画面上是一条蟒蛇正在消化一头大象。不过既然人们不能理解，我就另外画了一张：我画出了一条蟒蛇身体内部的情况，这样大人们就可以一目了然了。他们总需要别人把事情解释得清清楚楚。我的“作品二号”是这样的：

这一次，大人们的反应是劝我把蟒蛇图画——不管是表现外面还是透视内部的，统统放到一边，集中精力去学习地理、历史、数学和语文。正因为这样，我刚刚六岁就放弃了也许是前途无量的画家职业。我的“作品一号”和我的“作品二号”所遭受的失败，使我心灰意冷。大人们什么事情都理解不了，作为小孩子，总需要没完没了地给他们解释，真是太麻烦了。

于是我选择了另一个行当，学会了开飞机。全世界几乎每个角落的上空，都有过我飞行的轨迹：因此地理知识对我来说确实很有用。我只需看一眼，就能分辨中国和亚利桑那。一个人若是在黑夜里迷失了方向，这类知识是非常宝贵的。

在人生的旅途中，我曾经和无数的人打过无数的交道，这些人都在操心着重要的大事。我在大人们中间生活了很久。我曾经近距离地、深入细致地观察过他们。但那并没有怎么改善我对他们的看法。

每当我认识他们中间的一位，并觉得这个人头脑还比较清楚时，我总要做一个尝试。我拿出一直带在身边的我的“作品一号”给他看。我想弄清这个人是否真正具有理解能力。然而，无论是谁，是男人还是女人，总是说：

“那是一顶帽子。”

于是，我永远不会对那个人谈蟒蛇，谈原始森林，谈星空。我会把自己下降到他的层次上，和他讨论桥梁，讨论政治，讨论领带，讨论高尔夫球。这样，这位大人就会感到很宽慰，觉得遇到了一位通情达理的人。

飞机坠入沙漠，我认识了小王子

因此，我独自生活着，没有一个人可以真正地交谈。直到六年前，我的飞机在撒哈拉沙漠出了故障，发动机里的一个零件坏了。当时我的身边没有机械师，也没有乘客。我只好自己埋头进行复杂的维修工作。对我来说，这是一个生死攸关的问题：我带的淡水只够勉强维持一星期。

第一个夜晚，我就睡在沙漠里，睡在远离人类居住地区一千英里的地方。即使一位遇难的水手乘着小筏子在汪洋大海中沉浮，他也没有我那时那么孤独。因此，你便能够想象到，清晨我被一个奇怪的小声音唤醒时感到多么诧异。这个声音说：

“求求你——给我画一只小羊吧！”

“给我画一只小羊！”

此刻，我端详着这位从天而降的小精灵，吃惊得眼珠子都要从脑袋里跳出来了。别忘了，我的飞机是坠落在沙漠里，离人类社会有一千多英里呢。而我的这位小人儿看上去既不是在沙漠中漫无目的地徘徊，也没有因为饥渴、恐惧、疲劳而显得精疲力竭。看他的样子，根本不像一个在离人类千里之外的大沙漠里迷失方向的小孩子。等我终于回过神来，我对他说：

“可是——你在这里做什么呢？”

他的回答是重复着他的请求，语调十分缓慢，仿佛在说一桩非常重要的大事：

“求求你——给我画一只绵羊……”

当一种神秘力量令人震撼时，是没有人胆敢违抗它的。所以，尽管我觉得在与人类相距千里的地方，在死亡的危险中，拿起笔来画画显得有些荒唐，但我还是从口袋里掏出一张纸和我的自来水笔。可紧接着我想起来了，我全部的精力都放在学习地理、历史、算术和语法上了。于是，我对小家伙（颇为恼怒地）说，我不知道该怎么画。他回答说：

“没关系的。求求你给我画一只绵羊……”

但我从来没有画过羊呀。于是，我为他画了我经常画的两张图画中的一张，也就是那条蟒蛇的外部图。小家伙看见这幅画时所说的话，使我吃惊得瞪大了眼睛。他说：

“不是，不是，不是！我不要一头大象待在一条蟒蛇的肚子里。蟒蛇这种动物太可怕了，大象又粗又笨，真难看。在我生活的地方，每样东西都很小。我想要一只绵羊。给我画一只绵羊吧。”

于是我画了一张。

他仔细看了一会儿，说：

“不好。这只羊已经病病歪歪的了。重新给我画一张吧。”

我又画了一张。

我的朋友温和而宽容地笑了。

“你自己看看吧，”他说，“这不是一只小绵羊，这是一头山羊呀。它头上生着角呢。”

我只好再重画一张。

可是这一张也和前两张一样遭到否定。

“这只年纪太大了。我想要一只能活很长时间的绵羊。”

这时，我已经失去了耐心，我还急着要去拆修我的发动机呢。我就三笔两笔勾勒出这张图画。

我把画扔给他，同时解释了一句。

“这是装他的匣子。你要的绵羊就在里面。”

我十分惊奇地发现，我的小审判官脸上竟然绽开了笑容：

“这正合我的心意！你说，这只羊要吃很多草吗？”

“怎么啦？”

“因为在我住的地方，一切都很小……”

“他的草肯定够吃。”我说，“我送给你的是一只很小很小的羊。”

他埋头研究着那张画：

“也不是小得——瞧！他睡着了……”
