即使到了明年，我依旧不喜欢老年人。步履迟缓地蜷缩在助行架后，莫名其妙的急躁脾气，没完没了的抱怨。还有，茶歇时毫无新意的点心，连连不断的叹气声。

我83岁零三个月了。

1月2日星期三

有人把糖粉撒得到处都是。为了将桌子彻底抹干净，斯密特女士把盛着苹果肉桂派的盘子临时移到一张椅子上。

福特郝伊生夫人径直走来，大屁股扑腾一下坐在了肉桂派盘子中间，却丝毫没有察觉到。

直到斯密特女士到处搜寻，想把盘子放回桌上的时候，才有人想到去福特郝伊生夫人的屁股下找找。当她站起来时，花裙子上还粘了三块苹果肉桂派。“和你裙子图案很搭呢。”埃夫特说。我笑得都快岔气了。

昨天我散步去了花市，在那儿买了一个装有几颗风信子球茎的盒子。一周过后，当风信子发芽时，春天就又重新回来了。

这家养老院的大部分房间到四月还会挂着去年圣诞节的装饰，旁边还搁着一盆放了多年的虎皮兰，一盆已经开不出花的报春花。“丢弃东西是罪过。”

如果大自然能够抚慰人心的话，至少在荷兰老人居住的一室户的养老院房间里是不起效果的。室内盆栽植物的生长状况，大都可以诚实地反映出它的主人的境况：等待着一个凄凉的生命终止符。

因为无所事事或者健忘的缘故，老人们会给这些植物一天浇三次水。最后甚至连虎皮兰都会给他们养死。

费斯尔女士邀请我明天下午去她那儿一起喝茶。我本该拒绝她的，原因简单来说就是因为她浑身散发着臭味，但我还是回答说我很乐意接受她的邀请。可这样我一个下午就没了。上帝啊，我怎么还是这么迟钝呢。她邀请我的当下我居然编不出任何借口，所以我只好去她那儿一边吃着硬邦邦的蛋糕，一边陪她聊一些有的没的。她是如何成功地在短时间内把一块又软又多汁的蛋糕弄成像沾满灰尘的厚纸板一样硬的，这还真是个谜。每块蛋糕你都得用三杯茶才能咽下去。我明天一定得坚定地拒绝吃她的蛋糕。新生活新面貌。

新生活得有擦得闪亮的皮鞋，这就是我今天花了半个上午在忙活的事。擦鞋倒是挺快的，只是我把许多时间都花在如何将衬衫袖子上粘着的鞋油给弄下来。现在鞋子是闪闪亮了，但袖子我最后只能卷上去，因为上面的鞋油再也洗不掉了。

以后一定会有人这么评论：“您怎么总是把您的袖子弄得如此脏兮兮的，格伦先生？”

这里的生活离不开“从未”和“总是”两个词。比如有一天的餐食被说成“从未准点供应过，并且总是太烫了”，然后第二天的餐食就会被说成“总是太早供应了，并且从不是热的”。

我曾有一次小心翼翼地提醒那些人说，他们之前的说辞是完全矛盾的，但这儿的老人根本不管逻辑这回事。“您觉得您比我们更懂逻辑是吗，格伦先生？”
