我有一次买牛肉。排在我前面的是一个中年妇女，看样子是个知识分子，南方人。轮到她了，她问卖牛肉的："牛肉怎么做？"我很奇怪，问："你没有做过牛肉？"--"没有。我们家不吃牛羊肉。"--"那您买牛肉--"--"我的孩子大了，他们会到外地去。我让他们习惯习惯，出去了好适应。"这位做母亲的用心良苦。我于是尽了一趟义务，把她请到一边，讲了一通牛肉做法，从清炖、红烧、咖喱牛肉，直到广东的蚝油炒牛肉、四川的水煮牛肉、干煸牛肉丝……
有人不吃羊肉。我们到内蒙去体验生活。有一位女同志不吃羊肉，--闻到羊肉气味都恶心，这可苦了。她只好顿顿吃开水泡饭，吃咸菜。看见我吃手抓羊肉、羊贝子（全羊）吃得那样香，直生气！
有人不吃辣椒。我们到重庆去体验生活。有几个女演员去吃汤圆，进门就嚷嚷："不要辣椒！"卖汤圆的冷冷地说："汤圆没有放辣椒的！"
许多东西不吃，"下去"，很不方便。到一个地方，听不懂那里的话，也很麻烦。
我们到湘鄂赣去体验生活。在长沙，有一个同志的鞋坏了，去修鞋，鞋铺里不收。"为什么？"--"修鞋的不好过。"--"什么？"--"修鞋的不好过！"我只得给他翻译一下，告诉他修鞋的今天病了，他不舒服。上了井冈山，更麻烦了：井冈山说的是客家话。我们听一位队长介绍情况，他说这里没有人肯当干部，他挺身而出，他老婆反对，说是"辣子毛补，两头秀腐"--"什么什么？"我又得给他翻译："辣椒没有营养，吃下去两头受苦。"这样一翻译可就什么味道也没有了。
我去看昆曲，"打虎游街"、"借茶活捉"……好戏。小丑的苏白尤其传神，我听得津津有味，不时发出笑声。邻座是一个唱花旦的京剧女演员，她听不懂，直着急，老问："他说什么？说什么？"我又不能逐句翻译，她很遗憾。
我有一次到民族饭店去找人，身后有几个少女在叽叽呱呱地说很地道的苏州话。一边的电梯来了，一个少女大声招呼她的同伴："乖面乖面（这边这边）！"我回头一看：说苏州话的是几个美国人！
我们那位唱花旦的女演员在语言能力上比这几个美国少女可差多了。
一个文艺工作者、一个作家、一个演员的口味最好杂一点，从北京的豆汁到广东的龙虱都尝尝（有些吃的我也招架不了，比如贵州的鱼腥草）；耳音要好一些，能多听懂几种方言，四川话、苏州话、扬州话（有些话我也一句不懂，比如温州话）。否则，是个损失。
口味单调一点、耳音差一点，也还不要紧，最要紧的是对生活的兴趣要广一点。
