Introduction

爱新觉罗·溥仪撰写《我的前半生》的起始时间，据他自己说，从 1957年下半年开始着手准备，用了一年多时间，完成了20万字的初稿，并由中国人民解放军沈阳军区战犯管理所（即原抚顺战犯管理所）油印成册。
1960年1月，在毛泽东主席和周恩来总理的关注下，群众出版社把油印本印成灰色封面的铅印本（俗称“灰皮本”）。之后，群众出版社又与溥仪磋商，确定了重新搜集材料、重新构思、梳爬剔抉、提炼成文的思路。于是有了1962年6月“另起炉灶”的一稿本，约50万字。一稿本成稿后，作者征求并吸取有关部门和专家的意见，作了一些修改，并补充了“五十三年大事记”等有关内容材料，于1962年10月印出二稿本。全国政协、中宣部、统战部、最高人民法院、最高人民检察院等单位，及当时历史界、文学界许多专家学者、著名人士，如于桑、王宗一、中伯纯、刘大年、刘复之、老舍、吕振羽、张治中、李侃、邵循正、吴晗、何斡之、杨东莼、金城、郭沫若、侯外庐、阎宝航、凌云、翁独健、梅汝墩、傅作义、廖沫沙、廖承志、翦伯赞、黎澍（按姓氏笔画排序）等，审阅书稿后，对二稿本给予评价或提出许多中肯的修改意见。作者根据这些意见，对书稿进行了相应的调整，尤其是对后半部分进行了较多剪裁或变动，最终形成了1964年3月正式出版的《我的前半生》（以下简称“定本”）。
2004年3月，群众出版社在整理《我的前半生》档案材料时，意外地发现了一稿本和二稿本。为了将《我的前半生》完整地奉献给广大读者，我们对所有版本进行了认真的研究、论证，决定编辑出版《我的前半生（全本）》（以下简称“全本”）。
这次出版的“全本”，恢复了许多“定本”没有的内容。主要包括：一、二稿本原有的序言“中国人的骄傲”，第六章“伪满十四年”第一节 “同时上演的另一台戏——摘录一个参与者的记述”，第七章“在苏联的五年”第四节“远东国际军事法庭”，第十章“一切都在变”第四节“离婚”；“定本”中被简略或删削的某些叙述，如关于日本驻天津特务机关 “三野公馆”的描写，李鸿章记录清末一场大水灾情况的奏折，溥仪的打油诗以及占卜的卦辞，张宗昌生活简吏，婉容亲生婴儿被扔进锅炉烧化，等等。
与1964年出版的《我的前半生》相比，这次出版的“全本”，多出十五六万字，内容更完整，史实更丰富，文学性更强，并订正了“定本”引文的少量失误，基本上保留了二稿本的原貌。同时，增加了二稿本所没有的编者脚注（以“编者注”字样与未加此字样的作者原注相区别）。编者脚注主要作了四个方面的揭示：一、标出书稿未被删改的地方；二、指出书稿中的一些史实差误；三、对书稿中的某些内容加以说明；四、个别脚注反映1979年“定本”重印之后某些专家的修改意见。
