新凤霞，著名评剧演员，从小在天津学艺、唱戏，是个“苦孩子”。后来进京工作，有“评剧皇后”之誉，代表作有《花为媒》、《刘巧儿》等。1957年成为“内定右派”。至文ge，受到批斗、迫害。

Book Abstract

《父亲》

我家住在天津南市升平后杨家柴厂，是个典型的贫民家庭。父亲做小买卖，卖糖果、糖葫芦等，母亲是童养媳。父亲比我母亲大十六岁。母亲生了七个孩子，全靠父亲一人养活，我从小就尝够了过苦日子的滋味。

我父亲兄弟三个，还有一个守寡的大姑母，我父亲排行第三。我的二伯父和大伯父都比我们家好过些。大伯父是中医，还会算命，管人家的红白事，过年过节还给人家写对联；虽挣钱不多，可是没有孩子负担，只有一个后老伴，也不吃闲饭，给人家缝缝洗洗、伺候月子人等，因此他家日子好过。二伯父是京剧琴师，拉大弦的，也会拉二胡、弹三弦等。二伯父精明能干，二伯母去世，留下一个儿子。后来二伯父娶了同庆后班子的一个有名的妓女，她自己也开班子，还买卖女孩子。二伯父自从娶了这位能干的二娘，生活更好了，搬出我们的院子，一家单住。二伯父出来进去穿绸裹缎的，比我们家强多了。二伯父家买来的大女儿叫杨金香，唱京剧刀马花旦，是个好演员。

我常常跟着金香大姐去戏院子，也学着唱戏，也跟他们一道练功，有时也能演上个小孩子什么的角色。

我父亲是个耿直人，不喜欢二伯父一家人，我去唱戏都是偷偷去的。因为我从小常去二伯父家里，受了大姐的影响，也想长大了唱戏，当个好演员。父亲非常忠厚善良，他从小学徒，学糖食手艺，能做各种糖食，如麻糖、糖黏子、糕点、糖葫芦、炒红果、山楂糕、海棠蜜饯等等。因为家里负担重，父亲离开了资本家，自己做糖葫芦卖。

母亲常常流泪，因为父亲身体不好，有肺病，母亲常常为了生活太贫苦而难过，跟父亲吵嘴。我很小就懂事了，看见父亲挣钱这么困难，母亲为了父亲挣钱少和他吵嘴，我就对母亲说：“你别难过，我长大了挣钱养你。”我从小就没有看见父亲坐下来休息过，永远是忙忙碌碌地紧张劳动。他常常咳嗽，再加上儿女多，生活贫苦，他吐血了。父亲吐了血，还照样为这个穷家忙，天天出去做小买卖。

有一次，我父亲一大早就上市卖货，下了一整天大雪，父亲晚上回来在大门口不住地咳嗽，我听出是父亲的声音，赶快到门口去接父亲，看见父亲吐了一口血在雪地上，又趴下身去用手抓起，连血带雪又送回嘴里吃下去了。他对着我摆着手说：“没有事。”他认为这又补上吐出的血了。他有病不吃药，硬顶着，说：“吃药太苦了！”可是后来我才知道父亲不吃药不是怕苦，而是吃不起。一次，母亲得了月子病，我给母亲煎药，父亲在一边说：“这药是补身子的好药，好好地煎。”煎好药，母亲吃了一半就吃不下去了。父亲看见了，心疼地对我说：“可别倒掉哇！太可惜了！这可是好药呢。”他端起碗来自己喝下去了。他说：“这可不能浪费掉了。”我看见心里难过，这不是治他的病的药，是治经血不调的妇科病药哇！父亲老实忠厚没有文化，太无知了。他吃了这半碗药后，对他的吐血病当然没有好处。结果，一天几次大便，小便也多，身子更虚弱了。父亲还嘱咐我，不要跟别人说，怕人家笑话他。我非常心疼父亲这个愚昧无知善良的劳苦人！我决心长大了一定要长本事，挣钱养活父亲母亲！

可怜的父亲真是刻苦俭省，我至今记得有一年冬天下大雪，母亲叫我帮她给父亲做一件半身长的对襟大棉袄。我十一二岁就会做针线活了，虽是旧里子旧面子，给絮了一层新棉花，这件棉袄父亲去做买卖才肯穿，平时舍不得穿上。一天下大雪才停，父亲就要出门，我母亲对他说：“风后暖，雪后寒，穿上棉袄去吧。”父亲开始不肯穿，被我母亲一劝穿上了，可一转身又脱了，说：“去做买卖时再穿吧！”我母亲生气了：“看你这小气劲儿！”他才又穿上了。父亲这个可怜相儿，招得我母亲常骂他。

我父亲去做买卖是到妓院卖糖葫芦，晚上去，要深夜十二点多才回来，我和母亲夜里给父亲等门。我们坐在炕上小炕桌煤油灯前做针线活儿，等着父亲回来。有时我母亲带着弟弟妹妹们先睡一会儿，我一个人等着。这天我们正等着，听见外面呼呼地刮着西北风，母亲说：“听听这大风！亏得今天给你爸爸穿上了新棉袄，要不，多冷啊！”

我给父亲等门。他总是一进胡同就咳一声，我就听出来是父亲来了，就赶快跑去开门。这天父亲连咳了几声，我担心父亲这么心急是做买卖受了什么气了，我赶快跑出去开门，见父亲双手抱着肩，冻得直哆嗦，早晨穿出去的新棉袄没有了，只穿着小破夹袄。怎么回事啊？父亲不容我说话，就径直跑进了屋子，进了屋子一言不发，坐在炕边上对着小煤球炉子烤火。母亲一眼看见父亲身上没穿棉袄就急着问：“棉袄呢？”父亲已经暖和过来了，才慢慢地说：“给了人了。”我母亲急了：“你给了谁呀？这么冷的天，冬不借棉衣，夏不借扇哪！”父亲说是给了五兄弟了，就是我父亲的把兄弟，我叫五叔。父亲说，跟五叔一道在妓院做买卖，五叔看见一个十三四岁的小女孩子，被一个日本宪兵打骂侮辱。五叔气恨不过，冲上去打抱不平，救了那个被打得头破血流的女孩子。那群宪兵就反咬一口，说五叔偷了他们的钱，抓他进了宪兵队。

五叔为人很好，常来我家，是个坚强的汉子。他三十几岁，非常豪爽，直性子，常说：“人要有点骨气，宁折不能弯哪！”父亲说：“这次五叔打抱不平被宪兵队抓走时，只穿着一件薄薄的小破棉袄，我把我的新棉袄给了他。去坐牢哇！十冬腊月，进了宪兵队九死一生啊！要受刑啊！”又对我说：“为人要雪中送炭，不要锦上添花。”

我父亲一个字不认识，连自己的名字都不会写，但他会讲“三国”、“列国”、“隋唐传”，讲侠客、义士，都是从听书看戏中学来的。父亲把新棉袄给了人，母亲本来很生气；听父亲说完这些，母亲叹了一口气，也不做声了。

Introduction

这本《新凤霞回忆录》，序是艾青写的，题目是《美在天真》。

整本书读开来，有一种不能释手的喜欢，一方面是因为旧时代艺人的生活勾起我的兴趣，另一方面就是她的文字朴实生动，引人入胜。书里并没提到他和吴祖光的爱情，只提到吴被打成右派时她的痛苦与坚持。她说王宝钏能等十八年，我就能等二十八年。老舍的夫人后来对吴说：凤霞的心是金子做的。

书里的新凤霞是勇敢、美丽、心灵手巧（她几乎所有的女红都会做，家里人的毛衣都是她织得，她曾给吴祖光做了一件丝棉袄，又为眼红的丁聪和黄苗子各做了一件）、自尊坚强的女人，她善良但不懦弱，她又极有主见。尽管是个唱戏的，地位卑微，但她就像莲花一样出淤泥而不染，她写道：我像孔雀一样爱惜自己的羽毛，一根也不能损坏。

书的后记是吴祖光写的，第1句就是“可怜的凤霞”，但他又解释，“可怜”这两个字在家里是不能提的，因为新凤霞自尊心极强，她说：如果你是可怜我，你就给我走开。

本书初版插图是丁聪画的，他说：只要凤霞高兴。

从书中能看到这个女人的超凡的人格魅力和她对艺术的灵性与琢磨。

都说戏子无义，都说才子花心，但他们这对才子佳人的组合让人心生敬意，据他们的女儿吴霜说，新走后吴一直接受不了，想起她就要流泪。现在两人应该可以又在一起了吧。
