《唯有时间能证明伟大：极客之王特斯拉传》：
“静电效应可以用来产生光。例如，我们把耐火材料放入一个密闭的、最好是空气已被抽出的球体中，把它和高频高压电源连接，使气体分子高速振动。在耐火材料受到万亿次气体振动的打击以后，就会呈现出白炽化状态。或者，我们可以把物体放在真空球体中，接通高频高压电流，就能使物体维持我们所希望的白炽程度。”
他用碳按钮灯做了很多实验。1892年，他在英国和法国为科学协会做演讲时，提到了最重要的一种灯。但是，他的演讲也涉及其他新型灯和新发明。
碳按钮灯结构简单。它们基本上都含有一个直径为3至6英寸的玻璃球体，球体中间有一个耐火材料，通过单个电线连接到高频电流。球体中空气稀薄。
当球体连接高频电流时，球体中与中心按钮接触的空气分子被充电，被迫向玻璃球体做高速运动；在玻璃球体处，空气分子失去电荷，又被迫以高速返回按钮处。这个过程每秒发生无数次，使得按钮被加热到白炽化状态。
特斯拉能在结构简单的玻璃球中产生超高温，高温的限度似乎与电流流量有关。碳会被轻易汽化，因为液态碳十分不稳定，因此无法存在。当时已知的最耐热材料氧化锆也会立刻熔化。他也用过钻石和红宝石做按钮，但它们也会汽化。特斯拉本意并不想使材料熔化，但他经常做实验.以求得温度的最高和最低极限。他观察到，金刚砂最耐热，用电石做按钮比用其他物质做按钮更可靠。金刚砂不会轻易汽化，也不会在球体里留下残余物。
因此，特斯拉改善了操作电灯的技术，白炽按钮能将热能传递给管中稀薄的气体，然后使气体成为光源。电灯的工作原理就和太阳一样，按钮就是太阳庞大的球体，按钮周围的空气就是光球，或称之为太阳的大气发光层。
