Book Abstract

自那以后，有两年时间我一直很少有机会去拜见先生。国家恢复研究生教育制度后，学校为先生申报了硕士生导师，但国务院在审批过程中却破例批准先生为国家首批博士生导师。因此，1981年我在本科即将结束的时候，就下决心要报考他的研究生。那时当研究生还是一件非常荣耀的事，不像如今还要动员学生去报考。
非常幸运的是，我终于如愿以偿。这时，有好心人告诉我说先生的脾气很大，一不称心就要发火骂人，须时时小心。然而，在我从学的六年时间里（先是攻读硕士学位三年，继而又攻读博士学位三年），我虽曾目睹过先生一两次发火场面（那的确如炸雷一般厉害，使人很难相信在这么一个矮小的老年躯体内竟会充溢着如此巨大的激情），却从未亲身挨过先生的骂。相反，在我的印象里，先生是一个非常有感情，宽大为怀，能平易待人的长者，决不会乱发脾气。当然他治学极其严谨，指导学生也极其严格，一丝不苟。每星期有好几个半天，他都要亲自授课。即使是大病初愈，也不会停止，而且即使身体虚弱已极，一上起课来就精神焕发，滔滔不绝。他上课几乎纯用常熟方言，且语速极快，语调随感情而抑扬变化。兴奋起来，还会拿几首清诗、清文来吟唱（先生认为桐城派刘海峰、姚惜抱等把吟唱古文作为写好古文的秘传是值得重视的经验），外地学生一开始往往接受不了。他虽为我们上明清诗文，却常常广征博引，涉及整个中国古代文化领域，而且手无讲稿，如数家珍，熟悉他的人几乎无不惊叹他的博学强识。我有时常想，这么一个小小的身躯里的学识怎么会像茫无涯际，莫测深浅的大海一样永远不会枯竭呢？
先生为我们开出的必读书目常常是一长串，而且都是限时限刻要读完，到时他要检查笔记，打不得马虎眼。当时最使人苦恼的是望着眼前一大叠一大叠的线装古籍，盘算着何时才能读完，坐在图书馆里，常常会情不自禁地升起一种苦海无边的感觉。但是不管是夏天长脚花蚊的轮番攻击，还是春秋窗外树梢上小鸟自由的啼唤，都在一种无形的压力下被漠视了。就这样，在先生的指导之下，从清初到晚清一大批作家如吴伟业，顾炎武、屈大均、朱彝尊、王闽运、张之洞等大大小小数百家诗文集，终于都被啃了一遍。

十四年前，为夏晓虹主编的“学者追忆丛书”撰写“总序”，我曾提及：“作为学者而被追忆，不只是一种历史定位，更意味着进入当代人的精神生活。因为，人们总是以当下的生存处境及需求为支点，借助于与历史对话来获得思想资源与工作方向。”半个月后，意犹未尽，我又写了则短文《与学者结缘》，刊载于《文汇读书周报》。文章以周作人的《结缘豆》起兴，以《风雨谈》收尾，主旨是提醒读书人，尽可能多与第一流学者“结缘”：
并非每个文人都经得起“阅读”，学者自然也不例外。在觅到一本绝妙好书的同时，遭遇值得再三品味的学者，实在是一种幸运。由于专业需要，研究者一般必须与若干在世或早已谢世的前辈学者对话。“对话”与“结缘”，在我看来颇有区别，前者注重学理之是非，后者则兼及其人格魅力。大概是天性好奇，品尝过美味佳肴，意犹未尽，又悄悄溜进厨房去侦查一番，于是有了这些专业以外、不登大雅之堂的“考察报告”。
读第一流学者专深的著述，也读其色彩斑斓的人生，更读那些压在纸背的心情，这样的阅读，方才称得上“结缘”。而这种“结缘”，对于具体的读书人来说，影响极为深远。不信你看，凡读书有得者，多有几个极为心仪且经常挂在嘴上的著名学者的名字。
假如承认好学者大都“学问”背后有“情怀”，而不仅仅是“著述等身”，那么，最能理解其趣味与思路的，往往是及门弟子。
