梅隆法官的自传充分验证了这位圣贤的观点。梅隆先生是我在匹兹堡的一个朋友，几年前曾真实地记录过自己的故事。当然，梅隆先生的故事给朋友们带来了无限乐趣，而且会世代相传，对后代子孙产生影响。不仅如此，这《看透财富的商人：卡内基自传》也倍受诸多不了解他的人的喜爱。这《看透财富的商人：卡内基自传》向我们展示了一个人的真实情况，这是它的最大价值。这《看透财富的商人：卡内基自传》只是为家人而写，并不是想引起众人的关注。我也不想作为一个公众人物来讲述我的故事，只想作为一个与家人、朋友亲密相处的人，随意地叙述自己的一生。我相信，他们会对我的故事感兴趣的，哪怕是最琐碎的事情。
1835年11月25日，在苏格兰丹佛姆林市的一所小平房的阁楼里诞生了一个男婴，那就是我——与祖父同名的安德鲁·卡内基。我家的房子位于摩迪街和普奥里街的拐角处。正如人们常说的那样：“我的父亲穷困而老实，我的亲戚都是好人。”我的家庭背景正验证了这句至理名言。很久以来，丹佛姆林就是苏格兰著名的织布贸易中心。我的父亲威廉·卡内基当初就是一名织布工人。
当时，我的祖父不仅是激进派的领袖，而且是“帕提梅尔学院”——一个快乐社团——的负责人，在当地大小算个名人。他睿智风趣，平易近人，而且意志坚定，热情洋溢。当我时隔14年后再次回到丹佛姆林时，一个老人听说我是“教授”(我祖父的挚友们送给他的称号)的孙子后便来看我。这位老人看上去很老了，鼻子和下鄂都明显地表现出了老态。
