Author Description

李欧纳-科仁（Leonard Koren），美国艺术家、建筑师、作家，UCLA建筑与都市设计硕士。著有多本设计与美学相关书籍，如《侘寂之美》《体验泡澡：在热水中泡出设计》《如何耙草》《石与沙的花园》等。

娜妲莉-杜巴斯吉耶，出生于法国波尔多，1987年以前从事设计，并创办设计团队Memphis，设计作品包括织品、家具及物件。

Book Abstract

“摆放物品”，就是在三维空间里组合、放置物品，算是设计殿堂里的一个小角落。摆放物品包括两个方面：第一，选择待陈列的物品；第二，安排布置物品。不管在公共空间还是私人空间，摆放物品的行为几乎随处可见，但不可与艺术创作过程中进行的物品装置及安排混为一谈。大多数物品的摆放少有人留意，只有少数一些会让你驻足观看。一个“成功”的摆放方式必须有效，能够强烈吸引你的关注，也经得起一再品味。但怎样才能让摆放有效？本书认为有效的摆放拥有一种修辞的力量，或者修辞技巧，这个部分之后会有更多讨论。而在商业领域中，物品摆放更是无处不在，也被冠以不同的名号：摆放鲜花称为“花艺”；安排物品供拍照称为“造型”；陈设家里或办公场所的物件称为“室内布置”；商店橱窗或室内陈列商品则称为“视觉营销”。不管是商业领域还是非商业领域，有一点是共同的：摆放物品通常传达了某种意义。换句话说，物品怎么摆不单单是一种审美的表达，更是一种沟通行为。很多时候，物品摆放有一种类似语言的作用：分枝烛台旁插满红玫瑰的花瓶和一瓶冰镇香槟“说”出的就是“浪漫”。尽管摆放的方式还没像真正的语言一样系统化，但从某个层面来说，也自成一套体系。更准确的说法是，摆放的方式是一套“视觉沟通系统”，也就是借由视觉的方法来沟通表达。人们身上穿的衣服、头上的发式、车型与车款、手势动作等，都是一套明确的沟通系统。如同自然的语言，视觉沟通系统的成长与发展，也要经过不断的使用和实验。在持续的使用与实验中，逐渐拓宽了沟通的可能性。

Introduction

首先，这本书的画作不是“静物画”，而是为了说明物品摆放位置的插图。两者的区别看似不甚明显，但是稍晚我会加以说明。

这些画作在大体上依照的物品，大多是我在欧洲和北美的商店橱窗、店内摆设、工作室、办公场所以及一般人家里看过的各种各样的陈设。我将每一组特别摆放的物品中最关键的设计考虑点撷取出来，只用几句话向插画家说明。不意外的是，有些插图最后仍然有表达方面的明显局限。许多因素都可能造成细微却重要的差异，比如说物品的精确尺寸、形状以及物与物的空间距离；特殊的表面质感和光线；精确的透视法——不完全的呈现，或者表现主义式（与“现实主义”相对）的呈现等。

然而，即便在最理想的状况下，视觉信息的沟通也难免会出一些“差错”。比方说，“真实世界”里，照明的明暗差距、不适当的视角、观察时间的长短，甚至观察者幻想的心态，都可能造成与理想的“纯观察”之间的差距。此外，在描绘真实世界的过程中，物品摆放会从特定的空间位置转移到“虚拟的图示空间” 上，此时又会产生一些偏差。但是综合以上全部因素，我还是可以自信地说，本书的插图足以提供可信的信息，帮助读者理解内文所提出的观念。

插图中描绘的物品通常是普通的，也有些颇具特色，这些大多是画家娜妲莉•杜巴斯吉耶（Nathalie Du Pasquier）的收藏，平日用作她绘画的素材。娜妲莉居住在意大利，这些道具大多是当地人普通的家居用品。这些摆放在特定位置的物品大部分是随意挑选的，也就是说，如果你将一只杯子换成一本书，从摆放意义的角度来看，并没有太大差别。好像英语假设句中的无意义词，这个“假设”（物品）无关紧要，但你可以从语法结构（也就是物品的摆放）上了解句子的意义。

最后要说明几点：首先画作中的物品摆放并不一定诉求“美”，甚至未必是最“有效的”，而只是为了说明本书想要探讨的摆放修辞原则。其次，插画家在绘图时，并不知晓这些修辞原则。我没有对插画家解释这些，坦白说是因为在这本书的成形过程中，修辞部分的内容是较晚才酝酿出来的。
