现代博物馆的基本功能是收藏、展示和教育。在西方国家的博物馆内，常可看到成群的学生在教师的带领下围坐在展品前学习、讨论，将相关课程的课堂移至博物馆，直接面对作品，从小感受历史与文化积淀，沐浴于艺术的熏陶。实体博物馆在收藏展示原作方面无可替代，但仍然有很多缺憾，比如，因为时间、地域等因素限制，能亲赴博物馆参访的人还是少数；另外，由于大部分艺术品的唯一性，众多杰出作品分散在全球各个收藏机构，普通观众要想遍览这些人类艺术的精华几乎是不可能的。那么，如果有一部内容全面且不受时空限制的纸质“艺术博物馆”，把众多实体博物馆的镇馆之宝汇聚一书，是否可以在某种程度上弥补上述缺憾呢？这正是《艺术博物馆》的意义所在。

世界艺术通史著作的写作体例通常是先按时代或地域划分，再分述各艺术类型。以博物馆的方式呈现世界艺术通史则是英国费顿出版社的巧妙匠心。翻开这部大书，如同走进一座博物馆。不同展馆对应各时代和地域的艺术，其内再细分为一系列展厅，各展厅相对独立并有机系联，通过提示（交叉索引）可找到相关展厅的内容。每个展馆有挈领该馆内容的导言，各展厅有阐述相应历史的引论，所有展品标注了名称、年代、作者、材质、尺寸和解读。这些展品精挑细选，既具代表性也不乏独特性，经过合理的编排设计，再配以经过专业校色的大尺寸高清图片，为读者提供尽可能多的细节，营造接近实体博物馆的观看体验。《艺术博物馆》包罗万象，涉及绘画、雕塑、建筑和工艺品等各个艺术门类。有这样一部书放在案头，足不出户即可遍览世界艺术与文化通史。虽然西方艺术占据了较多篇幅，但对非西方艺术也给予了充分关注。行文深入浅出，能够阐发艺术与其社会和时代背景间的相互关系，适于不同层次和需求的读者。

《艺术博物馆》的策划及编著者是享誉世界的费顿出版社，该社成立于1923年，是全世界最负盛名的艺术出版机构，尤其以出版高质量视觉艺术图书著称。为打造《艺术博物馆》，费顿汇聚了世界各地超过100位一流的艺术史学者、策展人、评论家和编辑，历时13年，从全世界650余家最重要的博物馆、艺术机构及私人收藏获取作品授权、拍摄及购买艺术品高清电子图片，耗费巨资精心编纂。出版后，受到全世界读者的好评，被誉为“一本可以从小读到老的艺术大书”。

2012年，本书中文简体版首次在大陆出版，随后台湾又据此译文出版了繁体版。因当时的翻译工期短（六个月）等客观原因所限，留下了不少问题和缺憾。时隔四年，费顿出版社委托后浪出版公司对本书译文进行修订并再版。我们在审读译稿后，确实发现中文第一版的译文质量参差不齐，部分内容甚至存在较多错漏，因此决定对译文进行全面的审校和修订，并对版式、装帧以及个别图片也做了优化处理。

为保证审校质量，我们邀请的审校者必须具备两个条件：一是要有艺术史专业背景，否则难以准确把握相关术语、概念和史实；二是中英文水平过硬。其中，张欣、王滢和吴啸雷均毕业于北大艺术学院，张欣和王滢还参加过上一版的翻译，钱文逸、王俪洁、吴凡和李玉童都有在英美院校艺术史专业留学的履历。审校者先根据各自的专长领域选择章节，再按需要调配分工。对上一版译文偏弱的部分，我们做了重点审校，如展厅85—92，内文几乎重译。审校过程中，对存在问题的句子甚至漏译的整个段落，我们均进行了订正与补译。因为多人合译的原因，上一版还遗留了大量专有名词不一致的问题，在审校完成后由后浪编辑进行了全面的核查统一。除了对正文部分的审校，还对上一版因时间紧迫而未译的附录内容进行了补译，包括地图、术语表、展厅目录和馆藏地目录，方便读者稽查，进一步提升阅读体验。

此次修订再版，虽做了充分的准备和安排，但由于时间和水平所限，我们的工作难免仍有疏漏，恳请读者不吝赐正，以便再版时修订。希望这“座”近120万字、厚近1000页、容纳近3000件作品的纸上艺术博物馆为您开启一段美妙的旅程，在字里图间感受人类文明和艺术创造的灿烂风华。
