在这部德国电影里，一座地名不详、被舞台化了的城市，阳光很少露面，杀童事件频频发生。父母们焦虑不安。警察尽己所能。黑社会也被警告：杀童罪行很容易影响他们的地下活动。连在街上游手好闲的混混都在留意可疑人员，孩子们则在弗里茨·朗的电影里唱着毛骨悚然的歌曲：

你只要稍微地等一等呀，

穿黑衣服的坏人就要来。

他会拿着小小的斧头哟，

实际上，作案分子就像一个胖乎乎、瞪着大眼睛的小孩。电影开机时，彼得·洛只有27岁。他是匈牙利籍犹太人,真名叫拉斯洛·洛文施泰因，凭借一系列大胆的表现主义作品，早已在德国戏剧舞台上享有盛名。据说弗里茨·朗在构思《M就是凶手》这部电影之前，已和他有多年交情。他让彼得做好准备，给他演一回。这是影史上最伟大的表演之一，但奇怪的是，它也“杀死”或者说局限了彼得·洛的演艺生涯。

街上的几个乞丐走到彼得·洛跟前，其中一个拿着一支白粉笔在自己的手掌上写下大大的“M”，然后“意外地”撞上这个杀人犯，将掌心的“M”印在他黑色外套的后背处。这件跟裹尸布一样长的外套让彼得·洛成为令人印象深刻的坏家伙。

开始的几分钟里，杀人犯还没发现这个标示罪恶的记号，但是小女孩看见了，她告诉他：“叔叔，你的衣服脏了。”他很困惑，直到想起去照镜子并看到字母“M”—影史上一次著名的静止。这是个中景特写：盯着镜子的脸、外套上昭然若揭的字母“M”，还有镜子里那张吓坏了的脸—镜子里的眼睛也在盯着镜子外瞪着自己的人。内外两人对称地戴着软呢帽。极少有导演在构图能力上超越弗里茨·朗。在某种程度上，这个简洁的画面足以代表整部电影（该片摄影师是弗里茨·阿尔诺·瓦格纳）。

至此，真凶浮出水面。他知道自己被认出来了，也必然清楚自己会被抓住。但这个画面还有深刻得多的内涵：正是在这个瞬间，他直面了自己的本性。实际上，这个镜头微妙地削弱了剧本所做的“他对自己无能为力”的预设：他灵魂的一部分看清了自己。另外，镜子是银幕内的银幕，它引申出一个问题：为什么在现实中可怕的杀人犯在电影里却吸引着我们？在《M就是凶手》之前，没有电影思考这一点。

除此之外，彼得·洛也从中看到自己的未来。《M就是凶手》上映后十分轰动，把这位演员从德国推向了国际舞台。但由于过于独特的外形，他也将被永远地定型在杀手和疯子的角色上，只有那个怪诞的日本侦探角色“莫托先生”（Mr. Moto），才让他暂时逃离既定标签。当然，彼得·洛仍旧声名远播，有着独一无二的嗓音和表演风格的他还出现在《马耳他之鹰》和《卡萨布兰卡》等电影中。但这并不符合他对事业的真正期待。他后来沉溺于酒精，在精神上流离失所，去世时只有59岁。演员都想获得一个可以杀出一条血路的角色，但这样的角色有时也会伤害他们自己。
