注释
① 天地玄黄：出自《易经 · 坤卦》：“天玄而地黄。”为了押韵，《千字文》改作“天地玄黄”。唐代柳宗元《天说》有云：“彼上而玄者，世谓之天；下而黄者，世谓之地。”玄，接近黑色的深青色。
② 宇宙：指整个时间和空间，又指天地。《淮南子》：“四方上下谓之宇，往古来今谓之宙。”就是说，宇宙在时间和空间上都是没有边际、不可穷尽的。洪荒：混沌蒙昧的状态。洪，大。荒，蒙昧、未开化。
③ 盈：至望（阴历每月的十五日，或十六、十七日）时，月亮圆满丰盈。昃：倾斜，这里指每日过午，太阳就会西斜。
④ 辰：即星辰，古人对日、月、星等所有星体的通称。宿：即星宿，古人将天空中某些星的集合称为宿。列张：排列分布。
译文
天是深青色的，地是黄色的，宇宙形成于混沌蒙昧的状态中。太阳正了又斜，月亮圆了又缺，天空布满了星辰。
解读
《千字文》是一本神奇的启蒙读物，它的神奇就在于千字之间，包罗万象，天文地理，教育伦理，无所不有，而这一篇浩浩汤汤的恢弘篇章的源头，就是最初的那一句“天地玄黄，宇宙洪荒”。从这句话不难看出，中国古代学者对于世界本源很早就生成了一种原始朴素的认知，他们认为天地最初是一片混沌蒙昧的状态，有太阳、月亮、星辰漫布其间。但是，抽象的描述并不生动，于是古人便创造出了一个鲜活的盘古开天辟地的故事。
传说，最初的宇宙是一个大鸡蛋，里面混沌黑暗，还沉睡着一个巨人盘古。一万八千年后，盘古苏醒了，他伸展了一下筋骨，结果把鸡蛋撑成了两半，而后，他不住地挥舞手臂，不停地踢踹双腿，将黑暗涤清，使混沌分离，天地由此诞生了。
盘古就这样脚踩大地、双臂托天，不眠不休地撑着天地，转眼度过了一万八千年，随着盘古长成身高九万里的巨人，天地也遥隔了九万里。盘古太累了，他倒在地上，一睡不醒。
他死后，头、脚、身躯、左臂、右臂分别化作了东山、西山、中山、南山和北山，每座山支撑天的一角，确定了大地的中心和四方；左眼和右眼分别化作了太阳和月亮，而头发则化作满天星辰。他的肌肉、筋脉、血液、骨骼、汗毛与汗水都化作了大地、山川、江河、矿脉、万物生灵。
随着时代的进步，今天的人们普遍认为宇宙起源于一次大爆炸，太阳、月亮还有漫天繁星，不过都是大爆炸的产物。
知识扩展
古时候的中外天文学家为了观测天象和研究星球运行轨迹，专门划分了星区，从而将杂乱地散布于天空的繁星归纳成了条理清晰的体系。西方天文学家更是引入了星座的概念，并将其作为划分星空的标准。
尽管星座文化在国际上颇为盛行，但中国实际上有自己的星区划分体系。根据这套体系，天空被分为四象，即东、南、西、北，分别由青龙、朱雀、白虎、玄武四位星神掌管。每一象有七宿，四象共计二十八宿；每一宿都由数量不等的恒星组合而成，恒星数量少则两三颗，多则数十颗。
