严格地说，我们倾向于将绝大部分的人类动机归入比赛（game）精神一类。我们给自己设定做什么其实无关紧要。要紧的是，我们眼前要有目标。我们多少有些随意地发现目标、设定目标，比如教育充电、抚琴学画、赚钱生财等。但是，一旦目标确定，就有着毋庸置疑的价值，与个人的生活水乳交融、难分难解。至于具体目标究竟是蚕食竞争者的份额，是射门得分，还是其他什么，这些都纯属偶然。但是，一旦身处局中，此时此刻，实现目标即成生存之意义。更有甚者，不管是比赛，还是人生舞台，社会都为之提供了源源不断的推动力。当然，也有人崇尚“采菊东篱下，悠然见南山”的独居意境。
构成行为科学的基石，必然是行动和持久稳定动机的确定原理。然而，这个基石果真代表了人生的本质吗？这一点令人怀疑。人们不仅追求欲望的满足，更向往着多姿多彩的人生经历。事实上，似乎只有新鲜刺激、出人意表的事情才能引起我们的兴趣。人们倾向于以纯思维方式来判断我们行动的本质。对于这种倾向，我们要小心提防。思考即理性，或者至少要运用科学的方法。这原本就是“思维”一词的本义所在。逻辑思维是人类控制和利用外部环境的工具。理性思维创造了物质文明的奇迹。然而，这种思维方式带来的副作用也逐渐渗入个人的生活之中。笔者妄自揣度，这一侵蚀即便未至巅峰，却也渐行渐近。随兴而发的成功热望现在还主导我们的生活。然而，可以预期的是，更为冷静、更加伊壁鸠鲁式的生活态度将会取而代之。
