（一）什么是农民经纪人
我们先说什么是经纪。经，是指织物上纵的线或纱；纪，是指寻出散丝的头绪。经纪在这里有穿针引线之意，经纪人就是由此引申出来的。按照国家工商总局2004年8月28日修订的《经纪人管理办法》规定，我国现代的经纪人，是指以收取佣金为目的，为促成他人的交易而从事居间、行纪或代理等业务的公民、法人和其他经济组织。
农民经纪人是经纪人队伍中的一种。农业部2003年15号文件（《关于加强农村经纪人队伍建设的意见》）指出，农民经纪人是以活跃在农村经济领域为主，以收取佣金为目的，为促成他人交易而从事农产品产购销中介服务的自然人、法人和其他经济组织。
（二）农民经纪人的产生与发展
经纪人古已有之。有市场交易就有人为他人牵线搭桥或者提供其他交易服务。但是历史上，封建中国长期推行重农抑商的政策，商人受到贬抑，经纪人更是地位低下。新中国成立初期受计划经济体制的约束及传统观念的束缚，农产品经纪活动受到种种限制， “文革”中在农村甚至被视为投机倒把活动而受到打击；改革开放之初，尽管农产品的市场化流通逐渐放开，但专门从事农产品购销中介的人仍被称为“二道贩子”。近年来，随着市场经济的发展，各类经纪人队伍不断成长壮大，农民经纪人在搞活农产品市场流通中的作用日益显现，得到了社会的普遍认可。
