《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》结合发展中国家的结构性特征，应用新经济地理学的模型分析了货币外部性对城市空间不平衡的影响，应用博弈论模型分析了技术外部性对城市空间不平衡的影响。模型分析显示，城市化存在不平衡发展的趋势，发展中国家的结构性特征进一步强化了城市化发展空间不平衡的趋势。中国的实证分析与理论分析相吻合。城市化是经济发展的重要结构转变。中国，作为一个发展中大国，具有明显区域发展差异。城市化与城市空间结构演进相互作用，形成复杂的运动形式。《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》以中国的城市化为研究对象，分析了经济发展过程中的城市化和相应的城市结构演进规律。
在对城市化理论研究的回顾中，我们发现伴随着城市化的发展，理论研究关注的城市化推动力量日益复杂，新型工业化对城市化中的意义日益受到关注。《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》分别从工业化与城市化、农业发展与城市化、二元结构与城市化、城市失业与城市化、三大产业结构与城市化、知识经济与城市化等几个方面分析了中国的城市化进程，并对城市化进程进行了横截面数据分析。
产业集聚外部性可以分为货币外部性和技术外部性。
城市规模分布及其变化，是城市化研究的重要内容。《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》测算我国各省、三大区域以及全国的城市人口规模分布和经济规模分布Pareto指数（1997年、2000年和2003年），对Pareto指数进行跨区域和跨时间的对比分析，并实证分析我国城市规模分布的影响因素。分析表明，我国的城市规模分布显著地服从Pareto分布，并具有明显的结构性特征。工业化、产业结构以及运输能力对城市人口规模分布具有显著影响；工业化和运输能力是影响城市经济规模分布的重要因素。
《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》测度了城市集聚效应和集聚效率，对比分析其对城市规模分布变化的影响。《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》的实证结果表明，平均集聚效率指数的高低与各种规模城市分布比重的增减相一致。最后，《城市化进程与城市空间结构演进的经济学分析》针对大城市蔓延趋势提出了政策建议。

高鸿鹰，经济学博士，副教授。2005年毕业于武汉大学，获经济博士学位，之后，到清华大学从事博士学位。之后，到清华大学从事博士后研究工作，2007年博士后出站。现为北京物资学院副教授。主要研究方向；经济发展的区域平衡性、城市化以及城市空间结构变化。

第一章 经济学中城市化理论研究的发展
第一节 早期经济学中的城市发展思想
直到19世纪初期，城市人口占世界总人口的比重才达到3％，但是工业化进程对于城市化的推动作用已经开始在英国显现。工业革命促进了制造业和交通业的迅猛发展，促使生产从家庭小作坊转移到城市的大工厂中，城市人口的比重开始快速增长，这种趋势从英国开始向欧洲乃至于全球扩散。经济学研究也开始关注于城市发展的问题。
一、早期政治经济学对城市发展的阐述
早期政治经济学兴起之时，正是英国和法国从农业生产为主的社会向城市工业社会转变的初期，其开始对乡-城人口迁移进行关注。据当代著名发展经济学家刘易斯（A.W.Lewis）自称，他的“无限剩余劳动供给”人口迁移模式的基本论点之一——通过利润再投资而得到资本积累以扩大城市工业生产规模，并由此而推动乡-城人口迁移，正是斯密（A.Smith）思想的“再生和发展”。斯密已经开始关注于城市化进程中的生产要素积累和流动问题。斯密还分析城市对于经济发展的重要作用。“有些业务，哪怕是最普通的业务，也只能在大都市经营。例如，搬运工人，就只能在大都市生活。小村落固不待言；即普通墟市，亦嫌过小，不能给他以不断的工作。……农村工人几乎到处都是一个人经营几种性质很类似因而使用同一种材料的行业。……在苏格兰高地那样僻远内地，无论如何，总维持不了一个专门制造铁钉的工人。……一年也销不了他一日的制造额，就是说销不了一千枚。”斯密从劳动力市场、分工和市场容量3个方面，分析了城市发展对于工业化的重要意义。
