海伦·凯勒（Helen Keller 1880年6月27日-1968年6月1日)，19世纪美国著名的盲聋女作家、教育家、慈善家、社会活动家。海伦·凯勒凭借着自强不息的顽强毅力，在老师安妮·莎莉文的帮助下，不但掌握了英、法、德、拉丁、希腊五种语言，还完成了一系列有影响力的著作。同时，她还致力于为残疾人造福，建立各类慈善机构，并被美国《时代周刊》评为美国十大英雄偶像，荣获“总统自由勋章”等奖项。其主要著作有《假如给我三天光明》、《我的人生故事》等。

《假如给我三天光明》
我们都读过这样激动人心的故事，故事里主人公只剩下确知的有限生命，或有一年之长，或短短24小时。不管哪种情况，我们都很有兴趣去了解这个即将走到生命尽头的人会怎样度过人生的最后时光。当然，我说的是有选择权利的自由人，而不是活动范围严格受限的死囚。
这样的故事常引发我们思考：设身处地去换位思考，我们会怎么做呢？在人生的最后时刻，我们想做的是什么，想要体验的是什么，想要陪伴在身边的人又是谁？回首过去，我们得到了什么快乐，又留下了什么遗憾？
有时我想，如果我们把每一天都当作生命的最后一天，那就太好了。这种态度将使我们尤其注重生命的价值，我们将心态平和、充满活力、怀着敏锐的鉴赏力度过每一天；相反，如果前面还有数不清的日子，这些都会被我们抛诸脑后。当然，有些人奉行的是享乐主义——“吃饱喝足，醉生梦死”，但多数人仍因必定到来的死亡而经受磨炼。
在故事里，那个将死之人通常会在最后一刻幸运得救，但他的价值观肯定会发生变化，他变得更加懂得生命的意义及其永恒的精神价值。我们常常可以看到，那些现在或曾经生活在死亡阴影之下的人们做任何事都带有一种芳醇、甜美。
但是，大多数人都把生命视为理所当然。我们都知道人终有一死，但常会觉得那一天遥不可及。身强体健时，死亡几乎是件不可思议的事，我们很少想到死亡，似乎日子可以一直延伸到无尽的前方。因此，我们蹉跎岁月，碌碌无为，意识不到自己对生命的懈怠。
依我看，人们在各种感官也同样存在这种懈怠。只有失聪者才懂得听觉的可贵，只有失明者才明白视力健全是多大的福分，成年后的失聪或失明者对此尤其感同身受。但那些耳聪目明的人却没有好好利用这些神奇的感官，他们对一切视而不见，听而不闻，不知欣赏。还是那句老话，失去了才懂得拥有的不易，病倒了才懂得健康的宝贵。
我常这样想，如果每个人在成年之初都有几天看不见、听不见，这未必不是件好事。无尽的黑暗能使他珍惜光明，静默的冷寂能教他享受声音。
我经常问视力健全的朋友，问他们看见了什么。最近，一位好友来访，她刚从树林中散步回来，我问她看到了什么。“没什么特别的。”她回答。如果不是已经习惯了这种反应，我肯定不信。但我早已明白，能看得见的人看到的反而更少。
我不明白，在林中散步一小时，却没看见任何值得注意的东西，这怎么可能？我看不见，但通过触摸，就能发现许许多多让我兴致高涨的东西。我能摸到树叶的完美对称，我喜欢抚摸白桦树光滑的树皮，还有松树粗糙的树皮。春天，我满怀希望触摸树枝，寻找嫩芽，这是大自然从冬眠中苏醒过来的第一个信号。我抚摸花朵，感受它令人愉悦的天鹅绒般的质地，感受花瓣美妙的卷绕。这让我领略到了一点大自然的奇迹。有时，如果运气特别好，我把手轻轻放在一棵小树上，就能感觉到小鸟高声歌唱时愉快的颤抖。清凉的溪水淌过指间让我欢喜不已，厚厚松针或柔软青草铺就的地毯比最豪华的波斯地毯更让我倾心。对我来说，四季的盛会是一场激动人心、永不谢幕的戏剧，而且通过我的指尖就能感受到这些表演。
有时，我的内心在呐喊，我多么渴望能看到这一切！倘若只凭触摸就已得到这么多快乐，再加上一双明亮的眼睛，将会发现多少美啊。可惜，那些能看见的人看到的却太少——这个色彩斑斓、充满生机的世界在他们眼里理所当然。也许，人的天性就是如此，已有的不懂珍惜，没有的又渴望得到。但是，在一个光明的世界里，眼睛若仅为方便之用，而不是当作一种手段来充实生命，那实在太可惜了。
如果我是大学校长，我会开设一门“如何使用眼睛”的必修课。这门课要教授学生怎样去观察那些他们从未注意过的东西，为生活增加更多快乐。我们需要努力唤醒那些休眠、懒散的感官，去发现生命中更多的美。
