于是，他发起了父母教育和指导小组，帮助父母学习如何以更关心、更有效的方式对待孩子，如何了解自己的感受并更多地理解孩子的感受。他希望父母能够学会如何管束孩子而又不让孩子觉得丢脸，如何批评孩子而又不让孩子遭到贬低，如何不加评判地赞扬孩子，如何发怒而又不伤害孩子，如何承认孩子的感觉、认知和观点，而不是和孩子争论。如何对孩子做出回应，才能让孩子学会相信自己的内心，才能培养孩子的自信。
在成为心理学家之前，海姆·吉诺特博士是以色列的一名教师，他毕业于耶路撒冷的大卫·耶林师范学院。在教了几年书之后，他意识到，自己还没有为与班上的那些孩子打交道做好充分的准备。于是，他决定前往哥伦比亚大学师范学院深造，在那里，他获得了博士学位。
