实验室内的研究
一、动物实验和问题
研究生理心理学的最终目的虽然是为了阐明人的行为和心理活动的脑基础，但是在实际的实验研究中大都利用动物标本。用人做的实验比较少，而且只能在不损害脑和身体的外科手术或药物的有限条件下进行。因此，在生理心理学的教科书中引用大量的动物实验材料就无可厚非了。
在生理心理学的实验中最常用的动物有大鼠、豚鼠、猫、猴和黑猩猩。其他的如鸽、鸡和鱼，甚至更低等的爬行动物，诸如两栖动物和无脊椎动物（如海兔和章鱼等），由于它们有某种特殊行为或因它们的神经系统的某种特点或简单性，因而也常被利用。
应当指出，这些动物在系统发展的等级上有的和人类较为接近（如猴和黑猩猩），有的则距离人类甚远。它们的神经系统的结构是很不相同的。虽然神经生理学家至今并未发现神经组织的基本单位——神经元工作的原理，在各种类型的神经系统中有任何本质的不同，但是在神经元构成的脑中枢的水平上，在这些种类的动物中是有巨大差异的。就是在系统等级上接近的动物中，它们的某些同名的脑中枢在神经元线路的连接和功能上也不尽相同。原因是每种动物都有其特殊的生存条件和相应的适应行为，这就需要脑的特别的控制机制。例如，人和黑猩猩都有发达的大脑皮质。但在人类的生活中需要用语言彼此传达复杂的信息，黑猩猩的生活则不需要这样。
