有机体是不是处于一种顺应（adjusted）的状态呢？最近，从一些心理学家和精神分析学家（psychoanalyst）口中，我们经常听到“顺应”（adjust-ments）这个词，并知道了个体必须不断地顺应。有时，你会对这些著名学者的意思感到疑惑。行为主义者认为，仅仅顺应的人是一个死人--一个对任何刺激都没有反应的人。事实表明，个体对刺激A作出反应（习得的或非习得的反应，或是两者的结合），以这样一种方式（即他接着必须对刺激B作出反应）来改变他的环境，于是就会出现两种情况：刺激B实际上去除了刺激A;或者，由于对刺激B的反应，他可能这样来改变他的环境，即他忽略刺激A的范围。在第一种情形里，A被消除了；在第二种情形里，A在新的环境中停止了对机体的有效刺激。这是不是听起来很复杂？让我们举个例子，饥饿者首先出现的是胃的痉挛（刺激A），个体开始活动，他进入一个食物充足的环境--换言之，他进入了餐室开始吃东西（刺激B）。饥饿者的痉挛（刺激A）立刻停止。你将看到，这就意味着“顺应”作用。事实上，他不再遭受饥饿的刺激，但在吃饱了以后，另外的刺激（非食物的刺激）立刻发生影响，引起了其他的反应--这证明了我的论点，即有机体不会也不可能被顺应，这是毋庸置疑的。
让我举例说明另一个事实--个体对刺激A作出反应会引起环境的改变，这时刺激A不再发生作用。个体X躺在床上准备睡觉，街上的弧光灯通过一个遮光物的缝隙照进来。他扭动了一下，光线仍然照在他的眼睛上，他继续扭动，光线仍照在他的眼睛上，这时他会把头缩进被子里面，但热很快又使他钻出被子，光线仍照着他，于是他起身，做了一件明智的事--在遮光物的缝隙处钉上一张厚纸。这一对刺激A作出的反应使他进入了一个新的环境，在这一环境中不再把A作为一个刺激。因此，前面的两种情形经分析不是完全不同的。个体摆脱了刺激！但他摆脱的仅仅是其中一个刺激！另外一些刺激仍会有效地作用于他。心理学家所谓的“顺应不良”（malad-justment）通常是指两种对立倾向的刺激抑制了有机体摆脱促成刺激的范围。尽管这样，“顺应”这一术语仍是合适的，我们可以用它来说明我们的意思：个体通过他的活动使一个刺激平息或摆脱它的范围。我们解释“顺应”的用意在于有些事情与我们有关学习的试验结果是相类似的--动物获取食物、性、水或者摆脱一个产生消极反应的刺激等等。
