三、情绪与人格
人格心理学家为什么对情绪感兴趣？因为即使面对同样的事件，人们的情绪反应也各不相同。所以，情绪非常有助于把人们区别开来。理解人们在情绪上如何不同以及为何在情绪上有所不同，是理解人格的一个重要方面。
1.情绪状态与情绪特质
我们通常把情绪看作是起伏的状态。一个人陷入愤怒，然后平息；一个人变得悲伤，然后重新振作。情绪状态是短暂的，而且更多是取决于个体所处的情境而不是特定的个体。
我们也可以把情绪视为气质或者特质。比如，我们经常可通过描述个体频繁体验或表达的某种情绪来概括其特点：“小红是快乐的，充满激情的”，或者“小明经常愤怒，大发脾气”。在这里，情绪描述个体所拥有的气质或者持久的情绪特质。在个体的情绪生活中，情绪特质具有一致性。特质是指个体的行为或经验模式，它们至少具有跨时间的稳定性和跨情境的一致性。因此，情绪特质是指个体在不同情境中持续体验到的情绪反应模式。特质是人的内在属性，是导致个体产生特定行为和感受的原因。如果小红的快乐情绪是一种特质，那么我们假设，她的激情饱满的行为和愉快的举止是这一内部属性的反映，并不完全取决于外在事件。
2.情绪生活的内容
情绪生活的内容是指个体经常会体验到的典型情绪。内容的提法可以使我们思索个体在不同生活时间、不同情境中体验到的情绪种类。我们要讨论的是愉快和不愉快的情绪特质。
1）愉快的情绪特质
很多心理学家列出了基本的情绪清单，而在基本的情绪清单里，幸福或高兴是唯一被提及的愉快情绪。在情绪特质研究取向中，幸福以及对生活的满意度被视为主要的愉快特质。一个幸福的人通常有一个积极的自我观。换言之，幸福在一定程度上取决于对自我的积极感觉，如认为自己善良、有能力、有用，因为这些品质是幸福感的一部分。
2）不愉快的情绪特质
与愉快的情绪不同，不愉快的情绪可被分为截然不同的种类。有3种重要的不愉快情绪：焦虑、抑郁和生气。神经质的人往往易于产生负面情绪。神经质是大五人格的一个维度，它几乎以不同形式出现在每一种主要的人格理论中。
3.情绪管理
人格的一个核心功能是自我调节。自我调节的重要内容是压力管理、时间管理、认知调整和情绪管理。
学习在适当的情境中用成熟的方式真实地表达自己的情绪是情绪管理的一个重要方式。心理学家格罗斯设计了一个研究，要求部分被研究者在观看唤起欢乐和悲伤的影片时，控制住他们所感受到的任何情绪。一半被研究者被随机安排到抑制条件下，要求他们“在看电影时有任何感受都尽最大努力不要表露出来。换言之，你要表现得让观察你的人根本不知道你的感受是什么”；而另一半被研究者被安排到非抑制条件下，他们只是观看影片，没有任何要求抑制情绪的指导语。研究结果显示，与那些没有被要求抑制情绪的被研究者相比，被要求抑制情绪的被研究者表现出了生理唤起水平的增加，甚至在影片开始之前就如此。这种普遍的生理唤起反应意味着被试正在准备抑制情绪。与对照组相比，抑制组的被研究者自我报告对快乐影片的积极感受稍少，而对悲伤影片的伤感却并不减少。与善于表达情绪的人相比，抑制自己消极情绪的人的人际关系更差，幸福感也更低。由于不善于表达，抑制者破坏了正常形式的交流。这对关系的形成有阻碍作用，并且会减少人与人之间的和睦感。那些喜欢掩饰感情，不让其自然表露的人有可能会长期承受交感神经系统被唤醒带来的影响。例如，有研究表明，那些把消极情绪都隐藏于心的人比善于表达的人死亡率更高，癌症治疗后更有可能复发，免疫系统也更差。那些表达了消极情绪，与疾病斗争中表露情绪的癌症患者，比那些常常回避、抑制情绪并安静地接受治疗的患者活得更长久。一项关于恋爱中的情绪表达的研究充分说明了情绪表达的重要性。研究者发现，对伴侣表达感受越多，两个人关系中存在的问题就越少。了解他人的感受会让你相应地调适自己的行为。如果伴侣不表达他（她）的感受，那么你就难以知道什么会让他（她）开心，什么会让他（她）伤心。
