Author Description

乔纳森·波特，英国拉夫堡大学社会科学部话语分析教授。他的研究兴趣包括科学论辩、电视、种族主义、社会交往咨询等。作为一位享有世界声誉的定性方法的权威，他著述甚丰，目前已出版8本著作，参与撰写40多本书的部分章节，发表论文60余篇，内容涉及话语分析，言说心理学、焦点小组及其他心理学议题。同时，他还是15份学术期刊的编辑。
玛格丽特·韦斯雷尔，英国开放大学社会心理学教授；英国经济与社会研究委员会认同与社会行动项目主任。她的研究兴趣是言说心理学和话语分析。目前已合作出版《图绘种族主义的语言》（1992）、《认同，群体与社会议题》（1996）等多部著作。

乔姆斯基与心理学
语言能力和语言行为的区分
乔姆斯基认为，我们可以在构造合乎语法的句子的潜在能力及具体情形下的具体句子的实际构造之间做出区分。更正式地说，他区分了使说话者能够生成合乎语法的句子的一套规则和语言行为本身，后者受制于各种言语错误、失忆、分心以及由语境造成的影响。这里要谈的不是这个理论在经验上是否正确的问题（它在整体上不太成功，对该理论的实验研究的回顾，请参看Johnson.Laird，1974），而是这种方法存在着的概念上的困境。
在这些困境中，最基本的一个问题就是脱离语言行为来谈语言能力。如果不是借助语言行为的资料，研究人员怎么能够直接获得潜在的规则？难道是通过各种各样的实际（actual）语言吗？事实上，我们没有抛开语言行为来进行研究的进路。然而，乔姆斯基通过构造理想化的句子，然后使用它们来推演出语言能力的性质，他用这种方式来规避这一问题。语言学家（Lyons，1967）注意到，乔姆斯基的言语资料相比于普通的言语资料在三点上被理想化：第一，资料被规则化，因而普遍存在的错误、犹疑、自我纠正等被去除；第二，它是标准化的，也就是说，它没有考虑，比如说，发音上的变异性；第三，它是去语境化的，它将句子从其被使用的可能的具体语境中抽离出来。
这种理论将资料进行如此的转变，有循环论证之虞。这就好比某人要做视觉系统的研究，但仅用竖直线条作为刺激，然后得出结论说视觉系统特别适应于对竖直线条的感知。乔姆斯基只将特定的资料判定为“合理”的语言行为资料，然后在此基础上获得一组有序的生成性规则。然而，我们不是很清楚这些规则是否能够处理自然的语言行为资料，即平常情形中的平常对话。问题其实不在于理想化本身，毕竟，牛顿定律也仅仅适用于无摩擦的环境中。真正的担忧在于，乔姆斯基的理想化会丢失自然言语和非正式的日常对话的本质特征（对语言学中这类理想化的一份杰出的批评，可参见Harris，1980）。不过，乔姆斯基的方法对此有一个非常有趣的回应，即强调说话者的直觉的重要性。

时隔近20年之后，一本书从英伦远渡重洋来到中国，一方面见证了其自身的价值，另一方面也说明我国社会科学界吸纳西方学术进展的工作尚任重道远。这一旅程经历了巨大的语言转换，同时也经历了诠释的转换。作为译者，我们有幸或者不幸地（对学界而言）见证了这一转换，促成了这一转换，但我们绝不敢说，我们已经完成了这一转换。这一诠释转换的旅程，要靠中国社会科学自身的前行来做注解。而本文，无非就是庞杂的注解中的一个小标记，我们期待这一注解能够更丰富、更充实。
本书的两位作者都可谓是“文坛老手”，如果不是著作等身，至少也算得上是著述宏富。两位都是术业有专攻之人，在过去20多年里，为推动话语分析在社会心理学乃至社会科学界的影响立下汗马功劳。文坛老手的资质与术业有专攻的知识，二者之结合，便是能以通晓简练的文字对学术脉络和观点进行很好的梳理和阐释，这在本书中便有鲜明的体现。
