多年来，我一直积极参与的工作可以被概括地称为“传记工作”（Biography Work），指凭过往的经验来理解人类发展。这并非抽象或学术的研究，而是深入阅读我们生命故事的练习，同时也是倾听他人生命历程的机会。通过传记练习、艺术实践、自然观察、内在沉思和小组对话，对鲜活的命运问题进行探索。在这些具体练习的背后隐藏着更大的主题：在当今时代身为女人或男人，这意味着什么？不同的生命阶段，如何塑成了我的人生经历？是什么导致了各种各样为人处事的方式？在我的生命故事中，哪些东西是我独特具有的，哪些又是人类普遍存在的？根据我个人的体验，这种传记工作使人对生活、对成长的过程，越来越充满兴趣和热情。
在写这本书、与这些宏大的问题深深共处时，我经常被问道：“你的书是关于什么的？”我回答说：“生命！”这个答案总是会引起困惑的表情，或者嘲讽的窃笑。这本书涉及的范围很广，每一章都可以独立扩展为一本书。然而，我的目的是为读者提供更为广阔的视野，简要地谈及在这些年里挑战和触动我的，关于人类不同方面的问题。相信读者会自己去深入钻研他们感兴趣的特定主题。
