欧文·亚隆（Irvin Yalom）是美国斯坦福大学医学院精神医学的荣誉退休教授。他曾被授予1974年的Edward Strecker奖，和1979年的精神医学奖，他是《当尼采哭泣》（此书曾荣获1993年联邦俱乐部小说金奖）、《爱情刽子手》和《叔本华的治疗》的作者，他还撰写了经典教科书《住院病人的团体治疗》和《存在主义取向的心理治疗》。亚隆目前住美国加洲。

《直视骄阳：征服死亡恐惧》：
死亡焦虑改头换面——朱丽叶的故事
朱丽叶是一位49岁的英国治疗师，现居马萨诸塞州。她在前来加利福尼亚旅行的两周之内和我进行了几次面谈，希望能处理她在先前治疗中不曾解决的一个问题。
原来，朱丽叶的一位密友去世两年了。自那时起，她不但无法从痛失友人的悲伤中摆脱，而且产生了一系列症状，严重地影响了她的正常生活。她变得过分关注自己的身体健康，任何小小的疼痛或是痉挛都会让她惊慌不已，立即打电话给私人医生。并且，她变得不敢参加以前所热衷的许多运动，比如滑雪、滑冰、潜水，任何有一点点风险的活动她都不敢尝试。甚至，朱丽叶连开车都觉得不舒服，在登上来加利福尼亚的飞机之前还不得不服用安定。很明显，友人之死激起了她内心经过改头换面的极大的死亡焦虑。
