以1860年出版的《心理物理学纲要》一书为标志，费希纳创立了心理物理学。《西方心理学大师经典译丛：心理物理学纲要》提出了心理学史上第一个真正意义上的心理测量的量化公式——费希纳定律，用公式表达为S=klogR，它表明刺激量按几何级数增加而感觉量则按算术级数增加。因此，该书宣称要建立“一门身心函数的关系或其互相依存关系的精确科学”。《西方心理学大师经典译丛：心理物理学纲要》提出的最小可觉差法、正误法、平均差误法是经典心理物理学的三大方法，至今仍是任何一本实验心理学必须包含的内容。
《西方心理学大师经典译丛：心理物理学纲要》第一次把物理学的数量化测量方法带到心理学中来，提供了心理学实验研究的工具，为冯特建立实验心理学起了奠基的作用。
Author Description

古斯塔夫·费希纳（1801—1887），德国近代著名科学家和哲学家。33岁就担任莱比锡大学教授，几年后因病辞职，成为一位自由学者。他在学术上是个高产的学者，也是个多面手。一生发表论文183篇，出版著作81部。2009年以来他的著作重版多达近40种。他在自然科学涉足医学、药物学、生理学、物理学、电学、化学、数学、统计学等领域，在人文社会涉足哲学、美学、诗歌、讽刺文学、宗教、伦理学、逻辑学、百科全书等领域。他翻译和修订法国的物理学和化学教科书，改变了当时德国科学界落后的局面。他创办的《重要药物学报》至今仍存在，他还创建了德国第一个物理学研究所，他也是实验美学的创立者。他于1860年出版的《心理物理学纲要》为实验心理学这门新学科了奠定基础。

Book Abstract

在这里，心理物理学应该被理解为一门身心互相依存关系函数的精确科学，从更为一般意义上说，它是一门关于身体世界与心理世界、物理世界与心理世界之间关系的精确科学。
我们把那些通过内省观察或者由内省观察总结出来的内容都称作精神的、心理的或者灵魂的；把那些通过外部观察或者由外部观察总结出来的内容都称作是身体的、肉体的、物理的或者物质的。这些定义只涉及了事物的表现方面，而心理物理学需要致力于解决它们之间的关系问题，使用日常的语言来描述各种内外视角的观察，以展示各种单独存在的活动情况。
论如何，所有关于心理物理学的讨论和研究都只与物质和精神世界的外显现象相关联，与一个直接通过内省或外部观察呈现的世界相关联，或者与一个通过事物表现就能推导出结论，或者与获得现象学关系、分类、联想、推理、定律的世界相关联。简单地说，心理物理学从物理和化学角度涉及身体的问题，从实验心理学角度涉及心理的问题，但是没有以任何形式从形而上学的意义上谈到超现象领域的身体或灵魂的性质问题。
总之，我们的心理是生理的一个关联函数，反之亦然，它们之间存在一种恒定的关系，这种关系使我们能从一者的存在和变化推知另一者。
一般来说，我们不否定身体和心智之间的函数关系的存在；但是，对于这个关系原因的解释、二者间关系的界定和范围还是待解决的争议性问题。
心理物理学试图尽量准确地定义身心表现模式之间的函数关系，而不考虑这个争论中存在的形而上学观点（与现象相比，形而上学更关心所谓的实质）。
在物质和精神世界中，哪些特征在一起形成了数量和性质的关系？哪些又形成了距离远和近的关系呢？决定它们往同一个方向或相反方向变化的规律又是什么呢？一般而言，这些都是心理物理学所提出且试图进行解决的问题。
这句话也就是这个意思：哪些特征成对出现，就能构成一个物体的内外表现形式关系？又是什么规律来决定它们各自的变化呢？
