第一章联结的模式
问：我们将从创世大爆炸本身开始论述，接着再描绘出从物质到生命，再从生命到心智（mind）的进化过程。然后，我们将考察随着心智或者说是人类意识的出现，人类进化的五个或六个主要时期。而且，所有这一切都是放置在一种灵性（spirituality）的背景之中的——也就是说，灵性的含义，它在历史上曾经采取的各种不同的形式，以及在今后可能采取的形式。是这样的吗？
肯?威尔伯：是的，这是一种关于万事万物历史的简要的论述。这听起来有一点冠冕堂皇，但却是建立在我称之为“定位概括”（orien-ting generalizations）的基础之上的，这种“定位概括”极大地简化了所有事物。

在这里，关键之处在于，每一个事物基本上都是另一种或另一个事物的一个全子。在原子论者和整体论者之间有一个已经有2 000多年的哲学争论：究竟哪一个最终是真实的，是整体还是部分？答案是：“都不是”。或者，只要你愿意，你也可以说“都是”。在所有的方向和所有的途径上，只有“整体/部分”。
有一个古老的笑话。一个国王去请教一位哲人：“是什么使地球不会坠落？”哲人回答说：“地球被一头狮子托着。”“那么，狮子被什么托着呢？”“狮子被一只大象托着。”“大象又被什么托着呢？”“大象被一只海龟托着。”“海龟又被什么托着呢？”“就在这儿停住吧，陛下，”哲人打断说，“海龟就是一切。”
海龟就是一切，全子就是一切。无论我们走多远，我们都会发现全子依赖于全子。在一种无限的可能性的波浪中，即使是亚原子粒子（subatomic particle）也消失在一种泡沫内有泡沫与全子内有全子的云烟里。全子就是一切。
问：正如你所说，全子就是一切。我们永不可能达到一种终极的整体。
肯?威尔伯：对。任何整体同时也是另外某一整体的一部分，这是相对的，无穷尽的。时光川流不息，今天的整体就会是明日的部分…
相对而言，即使大宇宙的“整体”也仅仅是下一时刻整体的一部分。无论如何我们都不会拥有整体，因为根本就没有整体，这个世界上永远只有“整体/部分”。
所以，第一条原则就是，实在既不是由物质或过程组成的，也不是由整体或部分组成的，它是由“整体/部分”或全子所组成的，自始至终都是如此。
问：所以实在并不是由亚原子粒子之类的东西所组成的？
肯?威尔伯：当然不是。这种说法是一种极度的删减，因为它是要给予物理宇宙以特权。按照这种说法，万事万物——包括从生命到心智再到灵性——都不得不起源于次原子微粒了，这是绝对讲不通的。
