撒谎的少年
青少年常常将令他们头痛的麻烦(brand of headaches)转嫁给家庭。在他们心目中，认为自己比父母所认为的年龄要大二三岁，而且在他们认识到自己要坚持独立自主地做些什么之前，常常要求规则尽可能的宽松。在这种情况下，父母亲常常被卷了进去。这种情况实际上“一直存在”，不过，是在完全不同的另外一个时期。虽然父母亲愿意和他们的孩子分享他们的智慧，以保护处于青少年期的孩子，使其尽量避免产生对生活的不确定感，却发现自己不认识他们的孩子了：孩子比他们原先所预期的更桀骜不驯，也更容易喜怒无常，而且更爱冒险。由于对如何保护孩子并没有明确的把握，于是他们只好加强对孩子的控制；而青少年则以自己的行为来检验父母的规则，并由此确认父母亲这样做是不公平的。进入这个雷区(minefield)的治疗师和任何有能力的专业人员一样，需要同时和这两个阵营共情(empathize)，以寻求更好的路径(pathways)，就像同时在一条街的两边工作一样。
如何处理青少年的需求，我们所知并不充分，而处理来自混合家庭(blended families)的青少年的需求则更是一个全新的挑战。混合家庭必须像建立一个新家庭一样经历适应(accommodation)和形成界限(boundary making)的相同过程，然而又有一个很大的不同。在初次建立家庭时，父母亲在他们必须处理青少年孩子问题之前，有时间磨合成一个结合体(forge a bond)，而混合家庭则缺乏那段时间。
对继子女家庭(stepfamily)的研究显示，加强父母亲之间的关系，并且不让孩子的需要盖过婚姻的亲密，是十分重要的。同样至关重要的是，要在夫妇周围创造界限(boundary)，保护他们的隐私，并且给他们时间来处理他们之间的关系。每一对新夫妇都需要有单独分享爱的时间。要使再婚生活成功，你必须像任何其他活动一样付出时间。
下面这个个案并不少见。Boyd是一个三口之家： Mary、Richard和Whitney。Whitney 15岁，她是Mary和前夫的孩子，Mary离婚时Whitney还是个婴儿。Mary离婚一年后嫁给了Richard，现在他们前来治疗是因为15岁的Whitney无法让人信任她。她强迫性地反复撒谎，并且她的谎言多数时间都会被识破。
