Book Abstract

从历史的角度来看，鉴于爱的类型多种多样，本能这个词也具有多重含义。威廉·詹姆士（William James，1890）把本能看做一种先天固有的能力，表现为“在没有结果预期，也不对行为表现进行早期教导的情况下，仍产生结果”（第二卷，383页）。詹氏的本能原型是打喷嚏——由某些感觉刺激物（这里是嗅觉刺激）自动引发的反射冲动。詹姆士的确把他的本能概念扩展到更加复杂和更易感知的程度，其中包括社会偏好，如他提出的著名问题：“一旦少年喜欢一位少女，那么这个世界上似乎就没有什么事物比与少女有关的一切更重要和更有意义了，这是为什么呢？”（第二卷，第386页）
威廉·麦独孤（William McDougall，1908）对本能的解释更接近于现代对情绪的定义：“是一种遗传或先天的心理生理状态，决定了哪类事物会引起个体的感知和注意，对这类事物引发哪种情绪体验，以及采取哪种特定行为，或者至少产生采取哪类行为的冲动。”（第29页）麦独孤认为有七种强烈的情绪和本能相联系：（1）恐惧，（2）厌恶，（3）惊讶（与好奇相关），（4）愤怒，（5）屈从（羞耻或尴尬），（6）得意（骄傲），（7）父母本能（亲切、共情）。此外，他还提出了两个与情绪无关的社会动机——生殖本能和交往本能。
人们从来没有否认过本能对环境刺激物的不灵活性或麻木不仁。恰恰相反，詹姆士相信本能“并非总是一成不变的”（第二卷，第389页），实际上，“动物记忆中的任何一种本能活动在重复过程中必须摆脱‘盲目’的照搬照抄”，如果不受外界刺激物的影响，脱离了环境的评价尺度，先天的反应系统也就没有什么作用了。尽管20世纪的一些社会科学家认为本能和学习是风马牛不相及的，但无论应用于人类还是其他动物，这样的结论都是行不通的（Alcock，2001）。
本能的行为活动往往不是简单的“刺激一情绪一反应”链，而是随时间的变化逐渐积累的复杂结果。例如，莱尔曼（Lehrman，1965）指出斑尾林鸽的求偶过程包含一系列步骤：在求偶初期，一组刺激引发某些激素变化和行为反应，继而出现生理变化，导致鸟类专注于不同的刺激并引发不同的行为反应。
