计算机作为20世纪最激动人心的发明之一，自诞生以来，已经渗透到我们工作和日常生活的各个方面，正在改变并且还将继续改变我们的生活。随着计算机技术的应用不断推广和深化，计算机软件正承担起越来越重要的作用，涉及人类社会的各行各业、方方面面，用于解决变化多端的实际问题。应用领域在深度和广度上的拓展，导致了软件系统规模的激增和软件应用环境的日益复杂，同时因特网的飞速扩张，使网络作为信息基础设施，成为人们新的生活和工作方式，例如网上银行、电子商务、电子政务等。桌面应用向网络应用转移，从网上获得的不仅是信息，还包括软件服务——程序和交互式应用。
20世纪60年代，为解决“软件开发与维护费用居高不下、生产率低下，开发周期与版本升级时间过长，软件质量不能满足用户需要”等软件危机，诞生了软件工程（software engineering）学科。众所周知，软件生产是逻辑性很强的智力活动，其产品质量不像工业产品那样有严格的标准可以直接检测，因而难以得到有效控制和保障（Kan，2002）。因此，开发具有正确性、可用性以及开销合宜的高质量软件产品就成为软件开发人员和研究人员的共同目标（王立福，2002）。然而40年来，人们对软件工程的预测一直是发散的，尽管经历了面向过程、面向对象（object—oriented，OO）、面向构件等阶段，软件工程在许多软件项目开发中得到了一些成功应用。但是，形势仍旧不容乐观，目前软件项目完全成功的比例只是从20世纪80～90年代的10％上升到目前的30％，“软件危机”的呼声依旧不绝于耳，科学家们对软件工程的期望和软件自身的实际发展难以吻合。
