作者对中国充满了感情，三十年间足迹踏遍中国的每一个角落，敏锐地捕捉到这个具有厚重灰色调的国度在20世纪末对变革的渴望、对新鲜事物的痴迷，通过他的视角，将新旧交替时期的种种微妙和激烈之处真实地传递出来，真实展现了那段逐渐远去的历史。

Author Description

阎雷（Yann Layma），1962年生，法国知名摄影师。1984年，他获准自由进出巴黎爱丽舍宫，为当时的总统密特朗拍摄了一年政坛生活，成为法国一位获此殊荣的摄影师。1985年，他还曾借机进入朝鲜，成为一个进入朝鲜拍摄的西方摄影师。
1985年，阎雷以自由摄影师的身份首次来到中国，30年来共拍摄了60多个关于中国的摄影报道，出版了4本关于中国的著作。他的大型摄影集《中国》于2004年在全世界6个国家同步发行，印量达几十万册，这也使他成为在西方影响中国题材摄影师。2005年，他因在中法文化交流方面的突出贡献而被授予法国骑士勋章；2011年，当选《泊客中国》评选的“中国因你而美丽”11位“文化行者”之一。

广州/北京，冬天，1985年
与中国大陆的第一次接触让我无语。在广州，统一的着装形成了一种浑浊厚重的灰色调，没有任何对比，没有任何颜色。这种色调，我至今仍不知如何捕捉。那时我头脑中正进行着激烈的交锋，我不知道该如何行事，不知道该采取何种态度，但是那里轻松随意的氛围太有诱惑力了，那种懒散松懈和正式僵化的奇异组合既让我好奇，又让我惊讶。我知道只有花时间才能穿透这层表象，也知道中国人不会轻易向初来乍到的陌生人坦露他们的秘密：你得自己去争取。在第一组拍摄中，我调查了人们一些情绪上的迹象，发现在这个国家内部出现了一些渴望变革的欲望：在广州，人们贪婪地着迷于所有的新兴事物：第一个溜冰场，第一个带有浪漫情调的场所，第一批个体商店，第一批自由市场。好奇的民众身着毛式上装，排着队来到白天鹅宾馆看展览，着迷地看那纸扎的假山，挂着红纸灯笼的瀑布，以及把整个展馆搞得像伟大领袖结婚礼堂的大理石地板。有些胆子大的人一身香港人的派头，试图越过保安的看守。成功了！保安不敢阻拦，生怕一不小心犯了错误。
北京城简朴的灰色氛围，像索然无味的白开水一样。干燥的风吹得噼啪作响，到处都是煤球的气味。但是这个城市有一种过时的魅力：城市散发着斯巴达式的诗意，没有汽车的大街上演着一出自行车的芭蕾舞剧，古老胡同中进行着隐蔽的生活。我喜欢花好几天的时间在北京火车站流连。对我而言，这座既像宝塔、又像斯大林式远洋邮轮的建筑，是整个中国的中心：农民们从遥远的乡下来到这里，战士们从这里奔向自己的老家，城市居民去看望分散在全国各地的亲人。我还发现了一个出乎我意料的中国：夜幕下的紫禁城紫色城墙外，同性恋者在寻欢求爱；秘密的地下舞会上，年轻人开始学跳迪斯科；在一座体育馆里，中国一家股票交易所开门营业了。
我很高兴终于弄懂了北京光线的种种微妙和激烈之处：那被太阳穿透的奶白色晨雾，让整个世界看上去像一幅雕刻作品；土黄色的春季沙尘暴从戈壁滩上吹来；深蓝色的天空仿佛预示着冬天即将来临；魔法般的清晨和夜晚的光线，给生活渲染了一抹温暖的对比。
我的室友告诉我一件奇妙的事：搞到一瓶酸奶最有效的方法是从楼层管理员那里去买，而不是通过电话叫。
与王苗的相遇成为了我的一个转折点。作为一名激情洋溢的色彩专家，王苗被认为是中国最伟大的摄影师。她的作品曾发表在《地球》（GEO）杂志上，但她却无法接触到任何外国出版物。在法国大使的引荐下，她很快成了我的“老大姐”，并邀我与她的家人一起过新年。按照习俗，她和她时任农业部长的公公住在一起。我发现，所谓她的工作室，无非就是藏在楼梯下的一个小小的看片台。像她这样的天才竟如此缺乏资源！王苗想知道关于西方摄影的一切，那儿的摄影师是怎么生活的。她嘲笑我这个年轻人竟然想为整个中国创作肖像。我们很快发现彼此身上有太多东西值得学习。由于严重缺乏接触外国视觉文化的渠道，我们决定在中国摄影家协会建立一个摄影图书馆。我成功地从法国收集到了超过一吨重的书籍和杂志，日后我发现，在我接下来20年横贯中国的旅行过程中，这一举动将为我赢得数量庞大的朋友。王苗带我去了她在北京最喜欢的几个地方，每到一处，我俩都会观察那里的人们，摆弄我们的相机，用这种方式来研究我们的艺术，用这种方式去发现日常生活中多彩的美。这一年的新年是虎年，也是我的生肖。按照传统的说法，这一年是我的本命年。
