Book Abstract

1920年代少数商店,如中型百货店微微公司、香亚公司等开始雇用女店员。这些公司的主要动机是开拓女性市场,像英商惠罗公司为开拓本地市场,特增添华籍女店员。而在女权运动的号召下,也有公司宣称提供妇女就业机会。这些女店员多半被安排在“妇女部”,专门服务女顾客。至于永安公司雇用女职员的尝试,则是为了应付公司面临的工潮危机。1927年1月,上海百货公司职工曾掀起罢工风潮,要求改善生活待遇和福利,并成立职工会,以获得合法权利与资方谈判。罢工期间,为支应人力,永安公司招来不参与罢工者的亲戚朋友,多半是股东夫人和小姐,连监督郭标和郭乐的女眷也前来协助。一时三四十名女子出现在柜台后面,充当售货员。这些“女店员”个个短发掩耳、装扮漂亮,吸引不少顾客上门。不过根据时人观察,这些夫人小姐对于业务并不熟练,像糖果部的几位女士,只知道一磅的价钱,若以盎司计价,或只买几毛钱的糖果,便不熟习于计算了。公司内部对这些“临时女店员”的评价不得而知。不过,这次的经验反映当时上海社会对女店员的接受程度已经日渐提升,百货公司对女店员的态度也开始转变。

1930年代大型百货公司正式起用女店员。这项政策目的应该不是想以较便宜的女性劳动力取代男性劳动力。事实上,某些有经验的女店员甚至可以争取到与男同事同等的待遇,国货公司的女店员接受访问时即表示,她们与男店员的薪资并无不同。因此我们应该从另一个角度来认识女店员的作用。她们的雇用标准可能透露了一些线索。

根据永安公司的规定,女售货员的应征条件包括学历、年龄、外表三部分。永安公司的售货员,不论男女皆需具备中学程度,并熟练珠算和笔算,同时由于公司时常须接待外国顾客,因此也须通晓英语会话。这与当时其他商店相比,要求较为严格。像1940年代的大新公司职工,33.49%为高小毕业,34.94%为初中程度。而先施公司的职工初小和高中毕业者分别为12.98%和8.55%,初中毕业者达40.7%;如果只考虑店职员的部分,则初中学历者占64.84%,其中女店员的平均学历又比男性来得整齐,初中毕业者达86.96%。这个现象的原因之一,可能因为百货公司正式雇用女店员之时,也正是公司采取新人事制度的开始。先施与永安公司的第一代企业家,早年仅受数年私塾教育,关于企业经营的方法完全从实际工作经验摸索而来。1930年代第二代企业家上台,他们在父执辈栽培下,多半受新式高等教育,也因此采取标准化的雇用程序,对店职员的学历要求较高。女店员的教育程度高于全体的平均学历,正反映出1930年代百货公司的人事改革。

要求女店员中学程度,自然是出于对专业技能的要求,不过也和顾客的社会阶层有关。百货公司的主要顾客是城市的中产阶级,他们大部分具有中学或大学程度,因而公司当局认为学历相当的店职员较能赢得顾客的信赖。此外,中学毕业的女店员对中产阶级男性亦有较大的吸引力。根据1921年陈鹤琴对东南大学师生的调查,以及1923年《妇女杂志》所制作的“我之理想的配偶”专号,多数中产阶级男性希望配偶具备中学程度。可以推论,具备中学程度的女店员对中产阶级男性较具吸引力。同时,在消费文化的催化下,中学女生被塑造成专注装饰的摩登女子形象,对某些注重外表的男性而言,也具有相当的吸引力。换言之,对男性顾客而言,女店员的中学程度不仅是一种知识的衡量标准,它本身就是媒合的条件。

除了学历以外,永安公司对女售货员的年龄和外貌也有相当的规定,应征者年龄在18~20岁,身高在157~163厘米,体重为45~54公斤,须“身家清白、五官端正、体格健全,……无近视目疾者”。对男售货员也有类似的规定,不同的是,男性的年龄限制在21~25岁,身高在163~170厘米,体重为50~63公斤,没有“身家清白”的要求。这可能与当时对美的认定有关。根据1934年“国际美容院”对女性标准美的定义,身高为165厘米,体重52公斤。可能鉴于东方女性身材较为娇小,故公司将女店员的身高、体重标准略为降低。男性通常比女性身材高大,因此身高体重的标准亦略有差异。有趣的是,永安公司的《本公司雇用职员简则》并未要求相关售货经验,意味着年龄和外表体态的条件比“经验老到”来得更重要。1939年,一位年轻人应征永安公司售货员,中英文考试全都通过,只因近视而未被录取。此处主要从规则来分析,并不代表公司不看重应征者的经验。事实上,永安公司开张时曾向洋货店挖角,即看重洋货店老职员的经验和固定客源。而有经验的女店员也的确可以恃其经验随意跳槽,以争取高薪。这除了表明百货公司意欲突显“年轻美丽”的企业文化外,也暗示百货公司的销售策略是将售货员的外表与商品结合,“以色诱人”。此一策略不仅应用在女店员身上,男店员也同样须以俊秀的面目吸引女客。事实上,早在1924年已有论者指出百货公司的“女色部”(即专售女性物品的部门)的伙友,均为年龄30岁以下的俊秀少年,以招徕女性顾客。不过,性别与商品的结合仍多表现在女店员身上,其中最极致的例子,莫过于以商品取代女店员本身原有的身份辨识符号。

1930年代商业界开始流行为女店员取“皇后”“西施”等绰号。究竟谁是始作俑者,已难以追查,但这却为百货公司的商品打响知名度。例如,永安公司推出总代理的美国康克令钢笔时,特地雇用一名年轻貌美女性加以推销,她因此得“康克令皇后”之称。根据新新公司李承基先生的回忆,由于“康克令皇后”名噪一时,该部生意畅旺,以至于一般只知该名女售货员为“康克令皇后”,而不知其真实姓名。这种广告手法随即蔚为风潮,如新新公司负责销售水仙花牌热水壶的女店员被称为“水仙花皇后”,荣光公司有“袜子皇后”,华强公司有“奶包西施”,爱利公司有“绢头美人”等。这些女性被冠以所销售商品的品牌名号,极度商品化她们的身份。事实上,她们并没有自己独特的身份认同,所有被选来担任销售这些商品者都可以冠上“皇后”“西施”的封号。从广告的角度来说,这些招数的确成功地让人记得商品名称,但这同时使女店员与商品结合在一起。当顾客消费该项商品时,他们也同时消费了女店员所展示的女性特质。尤有甚者,许多顾客乃因售货员的性别而前来消费商品,因此,售货员的性别成为商品的“附加价值”,女店员不但是商品的推销者,也成为商品的一部分。

消费女售货员的,还不只是专程到百货公司“看看而已”的男性顾客,也包括报纸的读者。20世纪初期起,上海出现一种习称“小报”的出版品,以提供读者趣味性消息及休闲性文艺为主旨,相当受到一般市井小民的欢迎。因此在小报出现的女性形象很难与娱乐或情色划清界限。晚清到1920年代,小报的兴趣主要放在花界和戏曲界;1930年代电影工业兴起,电影明星便成为小报记者追逐的焦点。与此同时,各大百货公司以年轻貌美的女店员作为招徕,她们的动态也成为小报消息的来源之一,而各公司的“西施”“皇后”更是不能放过的对象。例如,《大都会》便曾经这样调侃国货公司玩具部的女店员:

素有“玩具西施”雅号之某大国货公司女职员郑××小姐,对于面部修饰,极为精究,尤于衣着一门,实不下电影明星,而美神不情,竟在郑小姐嘴角上〔留〕下一银角大之疮疤,晨钟暮鼓,不免对镜自惜,然郑小姐既精于美容,于是异想天开,最近在疤痕上贴了一块橡皮胶,接连旬余,同事等异之,有问者﹕“唉!郑小姐的疮疤呢?”“唔……”郑小姐的面上像关老夫子一样的赤化了。

从作者署名“多嘴”可以看出,这样的一则新闻目的只在博君一笑,调侃女店员的爱美,也提供读者茶余饭后的谈资。

各小报记者最有兴趣的话题,可能要数永安公司的“康克令女郎”了。1931年《上海生活》的创刊号即以“康克令皇后”谈曼丽女士的照片为封面,并介绍曰:

不知是谁替谈女士起了这样一个俏皮的外号,因了这件事,意使她离开商店的柜台,而重新回到学校里去。是的,她是太美丽了,一个女子太美丽是会惹是非的。太聪明了也会多烦恼的。但是她又是一个聪明而年青〔轻〕的人。

她现在慕尔堂念书,交际场中很难见到她的踪迹了。而外面对于女士的音讯,好像也断绝了,然而他那清波流云般的倩影却不能使我们忘却。
