Book Abstract

本篇探讨文的本原，指出文本于道，文是至高无上的道的体现。刘勰认为，文普遍存在于天地间和人类社会。天色玄，地色黄，天上日月垂光，地上山川焕采，都是文。人为万物之灵，发为语言文章，也有文采。以至龙凤虎豹草木等动植物均有文。文表现为形态色泽之美，也表现为音响声韵之美。它们都是自然而然地形成的，是道的体现。古代帝王和圣人制作的“六经”是人文的典范。古代帝王、圣人，秉承道心，取法天文地文，逐步制成“六经”。“六经”不但具有形态和声韵的语言文字之美，而且在政治教化方面发挥巨大作用。这也是道的体现。刘勰指出，道通过圣人表现为“六经”之文，圣人依据“六经”之文来阐明道。在这里，刘勰把自然之道和圣人之道（儒家的一套政治制度和伦理道德规范）混合起来了。刘勰论文章创作，强调应以圣人的经书为依归；本篇阐述圣人之道即由自然之道演绎而成，这就把他的文学理论提到哲学的本体论高度。
本篇中天地间的各种文都本于道的看法，接受了《老子》的影响。《老子》有道为“万物之母”（第一章）等话。本篇认为，古代帝王取法天地之象制作经书，则本于《易传·系辞》。《老子》所讲的道，是没有意志的自然；《系辞》所讲的天，则是有意志的，故本书《正纬》篇有“原夫图篆之见，乃昊天休命”的话。这里刘勰把道家自然之道和儒家上天意志混合在一起了。魏晋南北朝时代，糅合儒、道两家之说的玄学流行，它宗奉《老子》、《庄子》、《周易》三书为经典。玄学中有一个重要论题，名教与自然合一，即认为儒家所提倡的一套政治制度、伦理道德规范和道家所鼓吹的自然之道相一致。生活在齐梁时代的刘勰，接受玄学影响；本篇中圣人之道源出自然之道的言论，就是这一时代思潮的产物。
本篇所谓文，有广狭二义。广义的指天地间万物所表现的形态色泽和声韵之美；狭义的指人们用文字写作的文章（包括具有文学性的作品和实用文章）。据古籍记载，我国上古时代的一些杰出帝王，往往是具有非凡智慧、能力的领袖和发明家，被称为圣王。
