我经常被问到两个问题：一是我从什么时候开始学画画的；二是完成这幅画花了多长时间。其实这两个问题总让我不知如何回答。我从小就喜欢涂涂画画，从学会拿笔就开始画了，不过真的是在瞎画，真正接触到水彩是上大学以后，算是起步晚的。而说到一幅画的完成时间，不论尺寸大小，我得空便画，有时从早到晚坐在书桌前画；有时只有晚上得空，那就用几个晚上画完一幅。除了画画我没有其他爱好，既然画画是为了放松自己，又何必像完成任务一样规定自己什么时候完成呢？

这本书主要介绍了我日常用到的一些画材，对于古风花卉、人物的一些画法和心得，我只是比初学者先走了一步，才能在这里向大家介绍一二。很多东西无法立刻领悟，有些不能理解和掌握的地方希望大家在不断的绘画练习中体会。虽然每个人的情况和悟性不同，但只要勤于下笔，总是会有收获的！

谈及古风花儿与少年，便不由得想到《牡丹亭》中杜丽娘的“游园惊梦”，想到花园中翩翩而来的持柳条的书生，想到丽娘在自画像上的题诗：“近睹分明似俨然，远观自在若飞仙。他年得傍蟾宫客，不在梅边在柳边。”因之，本书取名《在柳边》。
