一天，天气晴朗，一小片尘埃（大约6×1063吨重，在同类天体中微不足道）离开太阳母亲的怀抱，开始自立门户。

这件事并没有在宇宙中掀起什么波澜，因为这个星球实在是渺小得可怜，那些住在宇宙中“贵族社区”的老资格星球根本没有注意到它，除非它上面的居民有先进的望远镜，比我们现在使用的天文望远镜更先进，而这显然是不可能的。

无论如何，我们还是不要太深究这些不体面的往事了，因为我们就是这个星球上的囚徒。不论我们是否愿意，这个小星球就是我们的家，而且在未来很长的一段时间内都是。

提到几万年甚至是几十万年的历史，我们似乎有点太随意了，但是我们无法不如此。因为通过考古，我们已经把所谓的“历史”时期延长了4倍有余（公认的“历史”定义是，对过去事件连续清晰的记录）。我们所认识的大多数事物，都有十分悠久的历史，这个事实足以教育我们的灵魂，让我们永远保持耐心和谦卑。我们应该知道，我们的祖先用了50万年的时间，才学会了直立行走，而他们同时代的生物，只不过是没有及时解决一些重要问题罢了，所以，对于其他生物，我们应该抱有宽容之心，而自身也要有清醒的认识。我们不过是个暴发户而已。在大多数生物来到地球很久之后，我们的祖先才出现，我们自以为是这个世界的主人，其实我们不过在前天才踏上这片土地。

至于我们是怎么学会直立行走的，其中很多步骤和细节还不甚了然，但是大概能猜到是怎么回事。

一开始，当地壳冷却下来，适合生命繁衍了，各种各样的动物和植物立即住满了地球。它们或是长着甲壳，或是眼睛看不见的微生物，全都生活在水中，是地球最早的主人。
